I have a set of Pro Topline 200cc aluminum lightning heads on my 355 chevy. Compression is 11:1 right now but I want to get the heads milled so I can be around 12.5:1. Currently i've been using Fel-pro 1003 gaskets with no problems but i'd like to know if there is a better gasket to use with aluminum heads? My concern is the steel ring in the gaskets may leave an imprint in the head and if I pull the heads and don't get them milled I may have a sealing problem next time I install the heads. Am I worrying over nothing? I'm partial to Fel-pro gaskets because they have always worked for me but am open to new ideas, maybe something with a smaller bore or slightly thinner than the 1003. Thanks!

Ahh, I see. So copper is the way to go with aluminum heads. Am I correct in assuming the steel ring gaskets may cause problems with the aluminum heads? Also, is copper the way to go or s there another composite type that may work well? I noticed SCE has copper gaskets that are sealed around all of the water jacket holes. Has anyone tried those yet?

Here's what I found for a description for the Fel-pro 1010:

Small Block Chevrolet 262-400 Fel-Pro Head Gasket, Pre-Flattened Copper, .039 in. Thick, 4.166 in. Bore. No steam holes are drilled in the gasket for street use on 400 blocks. Pre-flattened copper wire does not cause any brinneling on aluminum heads

Still wondering if anyone uses SCE copper gaskets? They're available slightly thinner than the Fel-Pro's. Any pros/cons to using copper gaskets?
