We are getting ready to build a 377 or 406, using a good 2-bolt 400 block. From what I been able to find out we need to bring an Honest 500-550 HP to the track to be competitive in this class.
At what point do splayed main caps become necessary?
Also, 400 blocks have been known to break the rear main caps, does anyone make an after-market (Stronger) rear main cap (wet sump engine).
Thanks in advance.

i would use them with that kind of power. you'll have more reliability. pro-gram engineering makes a nice rear wet sump cap. be ready to spend about 350 or so on just the rear cap!

I have never broke a rear cap, and broke plenty of center caps. I would just put the center caps in and clip the front and rear caps then line-bore and hone......

People that break rear caps over tighten the oil pump stud, this stresses the cap. Every rear cap I have looked at was cracked starting at the oil pump stud. I don't ever recall hearing of someone that uses a bolt breaking a rear cap. Just a observation.

Thanks for the replies. My feeling was, that I should use the splayed caps and you guys confirmed that.

The $350 (ouch) rear cap looks great, but Jeff's idea of watching the torque on the oil pump stud fits my budget better.

Thanks again!!!

It's been a while, but doesn't some company sell something like a "strap" for your main caps? I had a 400 years ago that had them. I can't remember 2 or 4 bolt block, though.

pro-gram makes a strap for front and rear caps (wet sump). they would be a less expensive alternative. i think i strap is like 70$ or so?
