Any Steve Smith book will give you a good explanation, and tell you how to measure/correct it. If I were to buy only one of his books it would be #S280 (latest book on IMCA Modifieds, contains bumpsteer charts which help alot).

Anyway in a nut shell.... Bumpsteer is dynamic toe caused by your steering arm (at the tie rod assy mount)traveling in an arc (while in bump and extension) that does not compliment the arc of the spindle.

It can be measured visually by grasping the hub (spring and shock removed) and then lifting and lowering it as you view the hub face relative to the wheel plane (line parrallel to the centerline of the car that passes thru the wheel you are looking at. ..... Or the preferred method is to use a bump steer guage.

Correcting bump steer can be done many ways (depending on your car type & class and what the problem is): adjustments include raising or lowering innner or outer tie rod pivot points, bending steering arms (or changing caster) and changing tie rod lengths.

My advice .... buy the book
