I'm thinking about buying a DUI Ignition System. I have ran an MSD with no troubles. What are everyone's thoughts?

Stick with the MSD. We went to the DUI a few years ago and had alot of problems with it. The gear on the bottom of the dist. kept coming off and we also went threw alot of moduls that year. We went back to the MSD and haven't had a problem for the last 2 years, but always carry a extra MSD box with ya!

I have ran the DUI for about 5 years and never have had a problem, not even a module. I bought a spare distributor and it just collects dust. I think there will be about a 50-50 split on which one everybody prefers.

bought my DUI back in 1995. Never a problem with it. seen lots of msd guys miss races or engine starts popping with them breaking down. never missed a beat with the same DUI distributor running it 7 years now. Only maintenance was to change rotor and distributor cap once in 7 years. Have won lots of races with it. Can't get any better in performance or easy on the budget than that.

Gary, Good to see your back. I like the MSD performance and theory but the new Jacobs electronics box has got me thinking.

Stick with the MSD.If you have a problem the parts truck should have the parts or another racer. The DUI works well but its not the common ignition you will find at the track.Im sure most of you have had to find parts for that one odd part you bought, at the track with no luck and end up watching rather then racing.

I run a stock HEI and I keep about 3 spare cap's and coil's wit me at all times. The HEI is real good if you have all racing part's in it though.

I run HEI's that I build myself. I use the DUI coil (53000 volts), MSD module (the one with the circuit board), and lock out all of the advance. It starts fine, even with a bunch of timing. I have had no troubles other that burning the wires off the dist. when I left a fuel fitting loose and tried to have scorched greggie for a racenight snack.

Just think to yourself, how many times have you been gettin your sunday afternoon nap during the Winston Cup races when you here Benny or someone else say,"Uh oh there is somethin wrong with xx car ,he's slowin down" Then a report from the pits. "The xx car switched ignition boxes and they think they're alright". The top level of competition with the best, most reliable MSD boxes available, and they regularly experience failures. They have to run 2 boxes, for chriss sakes. Tells me all I need to know about what to run.

I agree with mod67. Almost every race you see one of the nascar drivers switching out ignition boxes. Of course, I had to experience ignition failure the hard way before I learned. I ran a MSD set-up this year and it worked great until it was time to fire up the engine for the biggest feature of the year - no spark. Watched the biggest race of the year from the pits.

I too run the DUI. NEVER any problem. I enjoy the simplicity (NO BOXES) and the low maintenance costs. Here we run April thru early October which means air tempertures from 38 to 95 degrees. The DUI performs the same, all the time. Just my opinion.

We have run the MSD Pro Billet HEI dist. and have never had any problems. WE have ran the DUI distributors also but have had problems once awhile. I dont think the MSD box is the way to go because I have seen alot of racers not finish or not even start because of it. I have even seen where racers keep a spare in the trailer but by the time they need it its been in the trailer for awile and doesnt even work because of the vibration of sitting in the trailer.

How do you hook up traction control to the DUI. A bunch of the cars running MSD boxes have a horrible sounding motor on dry slick but seem to go forward real nice. This needs to be addressed or everyone will have to have the $1500. MSD box.

I think you're going to see the price start to drop on those units as you can now do the same thing with the digital ignitions yourself with a computer.

I ran HEI for a long time. When I switch to MSD the car just seemed to start better. I'm on alcohol when the weather warms up, and had trouble several times starting with the HEI (P.D.). Even on the coldest of nights the MSD seems to start better. But the HEI is in the trailer as a backup. I also try to always line up early in case there is a problem!

one thing to think of is that the rated output of the msd box is based on a 14volt imput. so unless you plan on running an alt. you will not get full output, max battery output at best is 12.7 volts. personally ive run both, but tend to like the hei better, less wires to worry about!!! never had a problem with hei

My MSD book says it will run at full power at 11 volts. An HEI will not turn 5000 at 10 volts.I have used both with success I think the MSD makes a difference under caution and in starting. So far haven't had a box fail.
