What ignition systems do you like? I use a Mallory Unilite with a Blaster coil or a Performance Distributors HEI. I like the simplicity of the HEI. What are your opinions?

I have never had any luck with Mallory stuff. I put this on my street race car and barely made it home from my shop. I put the HEI back in it(once i finnaly got home). Now, on my race car's, I use HEI with MSD module(inside cap) on my stock car with tayler wires. On my mod I use MSD billet distributor, 6a box(i believe) and Blaster coil, with Moroso wires. I Have turned 8 grand befor and never skipped a beat(on either car). I bought a Performace Distributers cap, coil and module one time, but I swear they just went to the zone and got this stuff, I noticed no difference...until I went with the MSD stuff....This is what I like.

we have run a performance distributor hei since 1995. never a problem. takes little battery to run it and don't run an alternator on our mod or late model with no problem.

HEI by Davis Unified Ignition, uses 1 wire and it makes impressive power.

With an MSD billet distributer, 6AL box with
a master blaster coil with blue max wires cant be beat. Put the soft springs in the
distributer for easy starting.

We use msd billet dist , 6al box, blaster coil, msd wires, and a racemate alternator built into the waterpump. Had a problem with with the 6al box but sent to msd and they rebuilt it for $24.00. Can't complain. Oh yea don't forget to unplug the box before welding on your chassis.

My last car used a complete complete mallory setup and never had any trouble with it.

Depends if your running gas or alcky. I haven't found an HEI that would fire good over 5000 RPM. I like the MSD Billet dist. and blaster coil with 6A box. Just make sure you have a spare box in your trailer cause you'll need it some time during the year. Just like Winston Cup cars they need two MSD boxes. They seem to last a little longer if you mount them on rubber pads. I've talked to MSD directly about this and they told me the latest boxes are being made with more anti-vibration materials inside the box itself. Time will tell. The only other draw back to HEI is air cleaner clearance.

Take Team49's advise and unhook the box and take the ground off the battery before you weld!

tls88mod, a performance distributor HEI I have will turn 7,500 all night long. I'm sure even more but that is the most I turn my motors. plenty of spark and never a miss in the engine. one wire connection, low drain on battery. ran an 83 lap with yellows, long, long race in mod winning race going away without any ignition problems.

I like the complete MSD setup myself but I think the Jacobs spark box sounds like it's worth looking into after reading Performance Ignitons. Wrote by Dr. Jacobs. It is supposed to adjust to different conditions at each cylinder.

tls88mod. "depends if your running gas or alky"???? The spark dont care what its setting afire. Now...your plugs will vary from gas or alky. One thing I have found about HEI ignitions is that if you are using the stock stuff, sometimes the GM modules are designed to 'cut out' at about the rpm you are talking about...Just for gas milage, and numerous other reasons. On the street you never notice this. In my stock car I DO NOT use the DUI or Performance Distributors HEI distributors...They cost too much...I get used HEI's out of the junkyard and take them apart and clean up. Reassemble with a Mr. Gasket curve kit, and use a MSD module (the one that looks like a computer chip) this thing is good for 9 grand Ive had mine up to 8 grand before, when track went dry slick UNEXPECTEDLY...From my experience, wether you run HEI, or Billit, with the boxes and coils, I like to make sure it's MSD stuff...Again this is just what I like...

Sorry guys, I didn't clarify what I meant by gas or alky. I run alky and tried an HEI with a performance coil, it would miss fire at 5500 rpm. Alky needs a hotter spark than gas especially at higher rpm. A freind of mine had the same problem so we put a MSD 6A box on with the HEI and that fixed the problem. By reading your comments I think my problems were bcause I did not invest in a good quality HEI dist.

Thanks for your feed back!

the last magazine article I read that tested the HEI's showed that above 5000 rpm the stock distributors go downhill fast in performance. but the Performance Distributor with it's coil and module never gave up even at 8,000 rpm with enough power for gas or alky

Our whole system is MSD. We have not had any trouble with for three years. Have takled to people that have forgotten to unhook it when welding not good.

I like the performance distributors myself. I have had mine for 5 years and it's still going strong.

I run a stock HEI distributer that we have modified. We run a MSD 6T box and a Accel HEI Super Coil. This Setup works very well! We run our motors at around 7500 RPM and it gives us no problems.
