I dont know what size motor to use. I have only raced fords before. I have decided to go to a chevy for the street stock(two barrel carbs)(3/8-1/4 tracks). I figured i would build a 350 but some people i have talked to say that i wont be able to keep up with every body. Should i go with a 383 or 400 ?????? .

we have a 360 c.i. limit in hobby now, but when there was no limit some 350's ran better than 383's, 406's, and even 421's. a friend of mine has a 360 in his super stock that will run with roller 421's and 434's. I think most of it is in good cam and head choice. I believe that in a 2-bbl class, bigger is not ALWAYS better as far as cam and heads (runners, valves, etc.), and even sometimes cubic inches. Just my humble opinion...

I would say what motor you run would depend on the type of track surface. If it runs slick I would say a good solid 350, if it runs tacky most of the time I would go 383. just my opinion. Like was said above what you get out of your combo is going to really depend on parts selection. A well thought out 350 with good head cam and gear combo will run over a sloppy 383. Just my opinion.

The 383 is a better all around motor. It will turn more rpm and can give you more hp if you cam it right. The 406 is good if you need a torque moster, but how many times do you finish the race on a tacky wet track? I'm guessing not often. If you need any thing else let me know. ltr spde

I race a 383 and I think it is an outstanding motor, however, I am a firm believer that if everyone's motor is within 20 or 30 horsepower of eachother, then the best setup and best line win. driver skill is also a big factor, Getting through the middle of the turn is key to fast lap times. I believe that a superior set-up is more important than being the guy with the horsepower bragging rights.
