There are tech books out that detail what has worked for others,or guide lines to work from, but most of us here can attest to learning from the book of hard knocks. What may work for me,may not work for you,not because we have some secret that we won't share, but some many different factors come into play.
When it comes to racing people tend to spent big money on the best parts to kick **** ,but sometimes the guy who finishes regularly in the top 5 will be running a basic race car. Basics is where it starts, you need to have those down first, then build on those.
If you want tech books to help you with input,go to google or ask jeeves web page and do some surfin and you will find alot of info.
This site of thedirtforum can answer so many questions you may have. I am always reading posts, and the insite this site has brought to my racing program is priceless.
Keep it simple to start with, get the basics down and build on those. Keep costs down, but keep safety a main factor. Your life, or someone elses may depend on the construction of your ride.

On the Steve Smith books- They are excellant. One thing I would like to point out is you can buy the exact same book from sources such as Day Motorsports cheaper than Steve Smith sells them for. I know it sounds odd but I ordered from SS and then seen them cheaper, canceled the order to SS and ordered elsewhere.
