A guy give me a couple of used 3 speed transmissions and I don't know what they are out of. I thought they were Saginiw's but when we went to the GM parts book the muncie tranny looked the same. I need to a few parts for one of them and need to know what tranny I have. It has a casting # 3925847. Hope someone can help.

I pulled what I came to understand was a Muncie 3-speed out of a 72' Chevy Truck some years back.

It was easily distinguishable from a common Saginaw 3 speed in several ways:

Larger diameter input shaft bearing along with a thicker, beefier Input bearing retainer

Longer Maincase along with shorter tailshaft extension housing (overall length was the same as a Sag, however).

I could see if it is still out in the shop and check the casting number is need be, but what you have should be visually identifiable.

I assume the Muncie is the better of the two? Is that correct?

We never used the muncie 3 speed we had ...sag is lighter and seems strong enough.

Here is another way to tell if it's a saginaw or muncie

type = m)uncie, s)aginaw

type years side cover id case id case length application
bolts
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
m318/319 '55-68 4 cast iron 7-1/8" --

m330 '69-78 7 cast iron 11" fully sync'ed

s326 '66-+ 7 cast iron 9-5/8" fully sync'ed

Saginaw 3 speed, grooves cut into the splines of the input shaft:
grooves run perpendicular to splines, all the way around the shaft.

0 Line 2.85-1st, 1.68-2nd, 1.00-3rd
1 Line 2.54-1st, 1.50-2nd, 1.00-3rd
2 Line 3.11-1st, 1.84-2nd, 1.00-3rd
