I'm pretty new to racing and was wondering what kind of horsepower would you normally expect from a 383 roller??? We are currently pulling about 655 horses out of the one we built last year....Is there any way to get more out of a 383?? we have always had good luck with them and would like to stick with them. but not sure what else to do to get more hp out of it.

where did you come up with those numbers tsmith2? are they actual figures that you witnessed on a dyno? not a desktop dyno....i'm having a tough time swallowing those numbers in a street stock.....but anythings possible.

I really didn't know that 655 was a lot of hp for our motor, but that is what it was when we put it on a dyno. I am no engine builder but I helped out a lot with some of the customizing that we did. We build our own motors and spent over 10,000 on this one. We build them tight so they will last. The last motor we built was a 383 but not a roller. It lasted over 3 full seasons of points championships and other races. I guess when my driver told me that we could use this motor if we move up to modified next year he wasn't kidding. We run an outlaw street stock in the midwest. I have only been involved in racing a couple of years (pit crew) and learn more every day.

Ford5....the new motor with 655 hp is a roller

Flatlander What kind of hp do modifieds usually run? and what do you mean by wanting to see us run if we use this motor? Do you think it would be good or bad? I have no idea...Thanks for your input

What he is saying is that 383's like that come pretty cheap for guys that finish on the lead lap in a modified.

Exactly it's a great motor but if you run it in a mod you'll probably lose it

I take it we should start out with the 383 until our driver gets a good read on how the mod works and we can dial in the setup and then we should move up with the motor power??

What would you suggest we move to next??? a 406 roller??? or more??? How much is enough...we want to be able to run with the big boys....super mods and such. Do mods run 899 hp motors??? I heard nascar winston cup cars only run 700 hp... (by the way...way to go jr...ie.sundays win)

I'm not the engine tech, maybe a shade tree mechanic, but I'm learning. I'm more of the tire man....stagger and air pressure... I appreciate any and all comments...thanks guys

If your going to run a mod, you will need at least a aluminum Rodeck block, Brodix headed, 434 CID roller with Kyptonite everything.

Maybe after Flatlander CLAIMS your 383 you'll be ready to move up to a bigger motor!

I take it we don't need that many hp to run a mod.

I'll put it this way, my buddy won a feature one nite with a stock crank/rod 327 with heavy TRW pistons and a solid cam and double hump heads. The motor only cost around $1500. the guy who got 2nd has unlimited money, runnin a hog ford motor and the track was tacky and was as fast as you could drive. Moral of the story, dont over motor a rookie driver especially if he doesnt know how to get the car hooked up and let alone know how to drive it!!!

he's the way i see it when it comes to hp if your car is hooked up and you get beat you need more if you can't get the car to hook up you need less. like flatlander said if you have alot you soon will have none in a mod

If your driver is sitting in a mod for the first time with THAT kind of power i'd really like to watch ,it should be entertainment for the first couple of laps till they got to scrape him off the wall.
Start small and work your way up till you find the right balance the opposite will just be frustratement and money .

I think with that motor you could run with the east coast big-block dirt mods.
