I am running a turbo 350 trans in low, here is the problem.
At the end of the straight when i let off the gas the trans shifts to another gear or it acts like it shuts the motor down and locks up the rear wheels. It only does this at 5900 rpm or higher. When i get back on the gas it is in low again. If i keep it under 5900 rpm it is fine, this is puzzling.
Any ideas??

Are you sure you are in low it sounds lik maybe its in second and drops to first you have to close the vac. off and tie the passing gear so it wont move its definatly a weird deal JMO

Flatlander, yes we are sure it is in low.
We lock it in after we shift it to low, also checked to make sure the linkage on trans. is all the way in low.
Will have to look at passing gear and vac. again.
Thanks

gar, just remove the governor from the cover on the drivers side rear of trans and break the plastic gear off with a hammer and put it back in. it will not shift out of
low again, no matter what.

most stock tranny's will override that is shift up to the next gear at a certain speed you can but a manual valve body to get around this or the governor trick will probably work

I like to hear more about the governer trick. Does it have any drawbacks (other than Low only)

the gov has weights that swing out when the speed gets faster you could keep them from coming out some way but the gear trick sounds easier

All of my trannies had the teeth ground off of the governer. I never had any trouble with them, just run a good cooler. I used a junkyard tranny with the governer trick for 2 full years, never a problem.

ford when you said it will not shift again do you mean litereally that unless you put a gov back in it that it will only work in 1st gear. i'm going to try a new set up this week and run 1st instead of second but i don't want to have to mess with it if i don't like it or does that trick work for any gear now i drive it like a manual and run in 2nd will it still work like that if the gov is gone

i have run a 350 turbo for 2 years now and never had it to shift out of low gear
are you sure your not talking about a 400 turbo?
i know they shift out of low when you reach a certain rpm, but i havent heard of this in a 350 turbo.

i agree with flatlander if your in low and when you let off it at the end of the strait
it want lock the rear wheels unless you drop a gear are you sure its in low
i ran a 456 gear on a 1/4 mile in 2nd gear
when i let off mine it dropped enough rpms and it shifted in low by its self locking up the rears

bubba if you unhook your vacume line it won't downshift on you but you will have to drive it like a manual

SOMETIMES WHEN U DISCONNECT THE VACUUM LINE THE TRANS WILL FREEWHEEL WHEN U LET OFF THE GAS AND NOT HAVE ANY ENGINE BRAKING WHICH MIGHT BE HAIRY ENTERING A CORNER.

Once you take the governerout and "trick" it it will notshift into 2nd or 3rd no matter what you do. You can put it into any gear you want and it is gonna stay in 1rst. If you want to be able to shift then your gonna have to spend the money on the manual valve body kit.

hey guys if anyone needs trans work i build circl track transmissions, t-350,t-400, and powerglides. normally t-350 with blue plate clutches, lightened clutch drums, manual valve body, and rework lube circuit to increase lube to planetary gears. no core charge. also working on direct drive t-350 set-up with no external plumbing, can use standard coupler or gutted converter(powerglides are getting hard to find) E-MAIL ME AT modi25@aol.com for pricing i am very reasonable for i am a racer also not trying to get rich just offset the cost.
