I'm reading alot of posts talking about offset wheels.

Is offset the same as backspacing?

The distance from the mounting surface to the back edge of the wheel?

Timcsim7, The terms are used in general speaking to mean the same thing....but they are two different things.........

As Racer2 said,You are correct in the measuring.......

Backspacing is the distance from the mounting surface to the back of the wheel...

Offset is the difference between the mounting flange and the center of the rim....

A wheel with zero offset will have the mounting flange in the center of the rim....

So, an 8in wheel with zero offset will have a backspacing of 4 in........

Changing one changes the other......but they are two different numbers......so you need to know which one they are talking about if you are buying wheels......

Good Luck,

So...

An 8' wheel with a 2' offset would have 2' of backspacing also right? The offset moves the wheel "out"?

positive offset increases the backspacing, negative offset decreases the backspacing.

I think John meant that positive offset increases track width.......it decreases backspacing.

Yes, if you have a 8in. wheel with a 2in. Positive offset, it will have a 2in. backspacing....and increase your track width 2 in. Positive offset moves the wheel out.

If the offset was 2in. negative, the backspacing would be 6in. and would have decreased the track width 2in.

I think I should mention,Most guys that I talk to use the term "offset", when they are talking about backspacing......even the guys who make the wheels.......or maybe I should have said the guys who sell them.....lol

Anyway, I think You got it figured out

Good Luck,

Snowman
