I would like an opinion about something. I am thinking of building a 350 chevy bored 40 over, flat top pistons,305 heads with1.6 exhaust, and 1.94 intake with a crane cam, 246 intake dur, 242 exhaust dur @ .050 with a 110 lobe seperation. We run on a slightly banked 3/8 oval dirt track with a 1.68 second gear and a 3.73 rear. What do you think?

Thanks, JJ

Are you having those heads machined to accommodate the 1.6 exhaust valves? If so the only suggestion I would have is either having it fitted with 2.02 intake valves as well or possibly avoiding the excess machining charges and see if you can run a set of "fuelie" heads that are already equipped with the 2.02/1.60 valves and have larger cc intake runners. If the rules and your budget allow them, a set of World products 2.02/1.60 heads with the 64 cc fastburn chambers and 200 cc intake runners would really wake that engine up over those 305 heads, no matter what casting number they are. That cam should be perfect for the RPM range you are looking to turn with that final drive gear ratio. I don't have as much experience racing on a 3/8 mile track though, but when we do run one we are in the 6.00 - 6.40 range usually. Hope that helps!

Hey John. Ran a typical setup in my camaro, but used one cam size smaller from Comp. Used 305 heads with the small valves, but I blueprinted the intakes for a depth of 1/2". Engine made major midrange power. I run a high banked .3mile track with a final gear of .688 and would turn the engine between 6,700 and 6,800 on DOT tires. Your final gear is .627. Depending on tire size, braking, etc., you might want to run just a tad more or less gear. Good luck.
