What is a good way to tell you have a bump steer issue. Will the car tend to push or get loose or just feel eratic.

This is my thought.....

Bumpsteer is primarily a corner entry issue since this is when most of the weight is transferred to the right front. As the weight transfers back to the front of the car upon entry, the car needs to turn in easily. You can make the car turn when your on the brakes and weight is tranferred by manipulating your bumpsteer. The position of your lower A-Arms in relationship to the position of your tie rods are the ticket. The more even or parallel they are, the less movement you will have in the front tires as weight is transfered or bumps are encountered. This will produce a stable car that is easy to drive.

Does anyone else have any experience with bump steer. I hear its very important to get it right but I have never heard of how the car behaves if you have a bump steer problem.

Bumpsteer on a street stock can be checked with a flat plate (toe plates work well just cut the center out and drill for the wheel studs) measure to a spot on the frame on the front and back edge of the plate and mark it with a marker. Now move the suspension up and down in 1" steps (measured at the spindle). and write down the difference. to correct bumpsteer the first thing I do is use a mid 80's Camaro center link and a 80 Monza outer tie rod on the right. To get better than this you have to play with bending the center link straighter.

If the question is: what is bumpsteer/what is the effect? The answer is: Dynamic toe change, with positve or negative effects.

It is useful to control, limit and be aware of your bumpsteer so that you can illiminate it or use it to your advantage.
I think it should be illiminated, some folks think it should be illiminated on the left and limited to a small amount of toe out on the right (in compression, kind of an artificial akerman), but .... in any case it is helpful to know what you have if for no other reason than to help you determine what is an appropriate static toe setting.
