Has anyone ever set their car up for left side brakes only? If so, how did you like the performance?

Whodat, There are a lot of guys who shut off the right front,and I have seen this practice advocated in more than one book. I must admit,it will help you turn into the corner. It will also help you turn left in the middle of the straight when there is a big pile up,and you find yourself wanting to turn RIGHT,really fast,really bad.

Going fast is important,turning into the corner is important,winning is important.But,
there is nothing more important than your SAFETY. The little woman needs you,The kids need you.

We take a lot of risks in this race car deal, We should try at all times to minimize the risks,and maximize the safety.


There it is,my 2 cents. I know I'm going to get hate mail over it,but thats OK. I'm a big boy and I can take it.

No hate mail on this one snowman, but i do differ. I have run sans rt front brake for many years without a problem. Remember this is only on 1/4 bull rings. It can let you set the car up to turn without crippling some other things. The I Stock we currently have has 4 wheel brakes as specified by IMCA. The car handles quite well but then all the other cars have 4 wheel brakes too. It makes a difficult comparision. Long track might be a different story but for short track and given the choice I would opt for no rt front brake. Just as a reference on our sprint car as well as all the other sprinters I've seen there is no rt front brake.

As far as turning left in the straight it seems to be okay when you know what it is going to do. If you really need brakes in the straight you want the car to go left. Not right toward the wall or straight into the pile of dummy drivers who crashed.

Everything in racing is a compromise. Whodat, educate yourself then make your choices. Hope this helps, SLEEPY

Thats OK Sleepy. Thats what makes this forum so great. I have lost this argument many times in the past,and will continue to lose it in the future. At least You make an intelligent one,and I salute You for that.

Here's my 2 cents . Here's the combo we ran for years before the 4 wheel brake issue. Rf Lf Lr 3 wheel brakes. When it was wet or needed to turn the car lf lr was used , if the track dried off really bad the rf was used. The car turned and stopped fine with just left side brakes but this was used with the spool in the rearend.What we was after was the fact that we lost about 40 lbs weight without the rotor,caliper,pads etc.

If you are going to have three wheel brakes you should have a shut off. At our track three wheel brakes work when its muddy, but it will hurt you pretty bad on a dry slick track. If it's illegal just hide it under the dash
