I recently had a transmission given to me that came out of an 87' Z28. The car was rotted out and the guy said I could have anything off it I wanted. It had a TH700-R4 tranny in it which was powered by a 305. Is this transmission race worthy or not. For now it is my only option since I cant find a reasonably priced used linkage for my Saginaw. Does anybody know anything about them? Thanks!!!

A 700r4 is real sensitive to heat, & if they are not rebuilt using better sprags and plates they are very weak.I would sell it & buy the linkage that you need. They bring about $300 used around here.

Those things are kinda weak in street cars, I don't think it would work in race car

The TH 700R4 tranny isn't what you're looking for. The 1st to 2nd gear drop is real excessive, and so is 3rd to 4th (4th is very tall). Since this tranny is primarily used in trucks, it's setup to allow a lot of slippage between gears. You'd have to put a real tight servo in (corvette), Kevlar bands, manual valve body, etc.
I'd try to find a TH 350 or a Powerglide.
