ok let's say you have a clean sheet of paper nad want to build a kick **** street stocker. which car would you use and why? metric, camaro, or anything else?

guess it would help if you knew what for. 1/4 to 3/8 medium banked dirt tracks.

Metric GM (Monte Carlo, Malibu, ect from 78 to 88). Parts are all interchangable and they cost about a dime a dozen. There's a big debate over metrics vs. cmamro's, but, in my opinion, old camaro's are getting to hard to find.

Actually, before I even say that, I should say that I think you shouldn't even consider anything other than a metric car or a 70's Camaro/Firebird. Any other make of car will cost mondo dollars more than a GM.

We run a camaro. But like WesterAuto17 said, camaro parts are getting hard to find.

All of the fast cars around here are camaros and firebirds. There aren't very many metrics running here. Most nights during the street stock feature, every car out there is a camaro.

I like the metric.. the cage I started with was a camaro snub and think the handles better.. but like they seid camaros are getteing hard to find..some freinds of mine run mods and the run ford frames and do well with them..

metric all the way i can't say much for a camaro because i have only seen one race in my life and that was not a pretty site he got smoked big time my buddy's dad has ran novas for years and can set one up real good but he has also gone to metric cars now

here a good discussion everyone has a different view. i say metric is the way to go. i prepare one of each every race week the metric car is easier to adjust.

i have a couple of camaro's but i'm not to interested in the leaf springs. i feel are tuning possiblities with the coil cars. what about the metric impala's or chevelles?

With a Chevelle, you're gonna have the same problems as the Camaro, '73 to '77 are the only ones that aren't collectable.

If you could make an '80's Impala work, than you'd be set b/c they are the only car that's almost as common as metrics. The only problem is the increased wheel base and weight. Its gonna be hard to get that thing down to 3000 lb. Depending on who you talk to, the increased width might help, but I doubt it. I've never seen an Impala running competively with street stocks.

Save the Chevelles for the hot rodders and save the Impalas for the demo derbies.

If you want to see what a kick *** metric street stock should look like, go to www.coxracingchassis.50megs.com and check out the ones they build. Metrics are the way to go. easier to adjust and many parts interchange and there are plenty of them around.

hey,what about the 82-93 camaros?there coil cars,loooooonnnnggg torque arm,very well thought out.yes there a little fragile,and some tracks don't let in the wheelbase (101),but smaller cars are the wave of the future,and here in the southeast,the future
has arrived!and just one other thought,when is some promoter going to start an all honda divsion?look on the streets,what are the kids driving.there cheap,quick,plentiful.

You'd have to re-engineer the entire front suspension b/c 3rd generation Camaros are struts instead of shock cars. Even the most liberal rules in the world won't let you put a different stub on an existing car. There was a debate about them a few months ago in this forum.

They run a four cylinder division at my track and a guy ran a Prelude once, did pretty well. I drive a Prelude - great car. If I were gonna race one of those type cars, it would be Honda all the way.

true,they are a strut car.but not in the traditional sense.the spring is not mounted on the strut,but on the lower control arm like the previous gen. camaros.and bilstein makes a killer racing strut,the springs are 5 inchers.you do have do a little mod to the strut plate to get enough camber,but i've got a grinder and a lot of time,sooo

Hey if you what to go fast theres one word to think of thats MOPAR. You can buy the stuff to make them handle and you can adjust front ride height buy turning a ***** kinda like a factory wieght jack. Mopar also make good power. So as they say GET REAL GET MOPAR.

I've run both Camaro and Metric and like both. Camaros seem to work better on dry slick tracks, Metrics are good on tacky. If your rules allow, you can get the Metric to hook on dry slick, otherwise cheat or go leaf. Camaros seem to work on about any surface, but the weight and cost of the leafs is a big drawback. Coils on the other hand are cheaper and more easily interchangeable.

I gotta jump in here......go on down to your local track and see what's crossing the line first--metric or camaro...then make your choice. Also note there are no 3rd gen. Camaros--at all ask yourself"what makes me think I can beat these guys at their own game?" If they were good street stoock material--there would be some racing! The junk yards are full of them-parts everywhere! Just 'cause they're too short, have a strut front suspension, crumple like tin foil, and ya can't get any experienced advice on setting one up------why not go there?

last fall i took a little trip away from my two local tracks for some end of the year specials,and came upon some fellows racing these little camaros,and like your self laughed my self silly from the seat of my chevelle.right up to the point where i followed a pair of them to the finsh 2 nights in a row.so i'm going to take the shot,and take what i learned home and maybe go from winning every now and then,to being the guy who wins all the time.if not i'll drop the motor back in old car and keep on keepin on

I'd build me another Nova only this time i'd build a front steer 75-79 instead of the 73 and earlier rear steer cars love them NOVAS.

Another one of those opinion topics. I watched racing for a lot of years before I was able to build my own car and get out there. I chose to build a 79'camaro for one reason....they won almost every week. A lot of new guys would come in and run the metrics and get stomped. I have, however, seen a metric win now and then, but always the same couple guys. I went with the statistics here, and anyone who tells you the metrics are sooooo much better hasn't been to the races lately. Both are being built so they must both have some good and some bad points. If I was on a tight budget then I would go metric due to the availability, but if you can spend an extra few $ I would build a camaro. One word of advice, get a southern car!!! I have replaced floors, leaf mounts etc. in mine because of this awesome northern weather. Believe me, you could spend your time much better elswhere.

seems to a mixed crowd here. the only drawback to the camaro so far seems to be the leaf springs. the only drawback to the metric seems to be,,,,,, nothing. if they are not as good on dry slick tracks, is that the cars fault or the set-up guys? i have both availible to build and it makes no difference to me, although i do lean torwards the metric cars. what kind of 'cheater' stuff can you do to the metric to make it better?

I dont think anybody really cheats i think they creatively interpret the rules and its something im sure we all do threr are to many gray areas in the rules.

If you really think nobody really cheats, they just interpret, read the "Torque Converters" topic. If these people spent the time and money they're spending on cheating on making the car better legally, maybe they wouldn't need to cheat so much.

I race dirt tracks in south Louisiana.The car that is always in the top 2 is a malibu.
I'm thinking of getting rid of my camaro and getting a malibu myself.The malibu's handle
so much better than the camaro's.They don't slide in the turns either.If I were gonna choose a car(this is totally my opinion,you go with the car you want to.)I would choose a malibu.

A metric car is a GM intermediate between '78 and '88. They are the Monte Carlo, Grand Prix and Cutlass. Am I leaving any out?

They are coil spring rear suspension as opposed to pre-'82 leaf spring Camaros and Firebirds.

There was a guy at my track last year running a 2 door Crown Vic and doing pretty well. Maybe it was something else under the body.

Question for you ford lovers - Why are there no Thunderbird or Cougar stockers?

There are a few T-Birds streets around here that are pretty fast. Keith Haislip has a quick one.
