Looking to move my son out of karts into a car and want some input on coil cars vs leafs. Any input will be appreciated.

i feel that leafs give the tires alot more grip but leaves no room for adjustments.

we are moving our l7 year old up from street stock to mod, and we bought an older leaf spring car, we have been told that this was good for a starter...hope that is

We have always raced coils. Most higher classes threw away their leafs a long time ago.

I've been whipped by all rear suspensions. I did not do well with leafs but it was because of my lack of knowledge about them, when they are right they work well.

I'd go with a coil car.Not to bash leafs,they can and do work well. However, the leaf cars that would work well,such as Camaros,firebirds,etc, are more difficult to find and more expensive to buy parts for. I'm not just talking about springs,the first time you need door skins,quarter panels,control arms,(stuff happens) you may have a problem finding them. Metric cars are much more plentiful,parts are cheeper and easy to find. Coils are cheeper,less upkeep,so it's easier to get your coil car dialed in to your track.ONE MORE THING,I don't want to annoy uni-body fans,BUT,it is much easier to build a safe full frame car than to build a safe uni-body car

If you are limited to a stock type suspension (like most bombers or street stocks) I would go with leafs. If the rules allow you to run more sophisticated type suspension setups (ie pull bar)I would go with the coil type. Leafs however need to be changed on a regular basis and that can be expensive.

i hate to disagree 49 but i think you only have to change the leafs depending on the track you run at. we have guys at my track that buy new leafs and those of us that run the most worn out set we can get. we all run the same. i have a top 5 car and i have run the same stock ones for 3 years now. my friend has been track champ for 3 years now and he does the same. i think its the track cause some on this site such as yourself say to change them so some track types, conditions may warrant the new leafs. as far as leaf/ spring i agree that the spring cars are easier to find. the camaro/ firebird cars are getting scarce. id go with a cutlass first. the springs are about 50 bucks each and if you keep the car on stands whenever possible you can extend the life of the springs.

ac i think they will but they are half as expensive and to add life to them when not at track or on trailer block car on frame and release the pressure on them

AC, I don't think coils actually wear out,certainly not in the lifespan of average race cars...what they may do is lose some of thier free height,I guess some would call that wore out.But even then they seem to retain the same rate and could be shimed for ride height if the buget is tight.This is really a moot point if you buy afcoils as they are guaranteed for life and will be replaced free if they lose height......The reason leafs have a short lifespan is that they have to work so hard.Depending on the paticular design,leafs may be asked to be the torque arm,provide lateral location,as well as hold the car up.Tough job.

the coils are the way to go. the leafs seem to have better forward bite but the coils are lots easier to adjust your ride height. you can also use spring rubbers to change the rate on tacky/fast tracks.
