I have a chance to get some heads off of a what is described as a 1988 Camaro/TransAm TPI H.O. 350 (high output). I don't have any casting numbers yet. Compared to other stock heads, (041's, Vortec's, 461's, 186's etc, are they good for decent flow and performance? What is the chamber size and other spec's?

I need a set of heads for a Hobby-Stock dirt track car, 2,000-5,000 RPM, two barrel carb, stock exhaust manifolds, etc. They must be stock heads, no double humps, no 305's etc. Would these perform OK? I'm stuck with 305 heads at the moment for higher compression, but they're illegal and the flow, I'm sure, is no good.

I believe that even with the lower compression, some 64 cc, 350 heads with flat tops will out perform the 305's because of better flow.

What does everyone think?

I recommend a new set of Vortec Heads for your Hobby Car, I run a set on my Hobby and they are unreal. My engine builder flowed a set out of the box, and they out flowed a set of camel humps with 2.02, 1.6's. For $400 you get a complete set of heads, I changed my springs to allow me to operate in the 7500 RPM range, the engine never seems to run out of power. Remember, you will have to have the heads drilled to fit a early model intake and the center bolt valve covers are a dead giveaway of your secret, check your rules and if they allow it I highly recommend them.

We wound up getting some Vortec's. I've always wanted to try them. We will drill them out to accept a 2 bbl manifold and see what happens.


There are some adapters to allow the old style covers to be installed on late style heads, but they're about $100! I'll stick with the late style.

Our rules say no porting, double humps, or other "performance enhancing" heads allowed. Nothing about Vortecs. So unless they say these heads are enhancing, I won't try hiding them with old style covers. I can always play dumb! ("these heads are just something that came off a late modle truck!")

If you notch the center intake manifold bolt holes the bolts will fit fine. The angle at which the bolts go into the head are different, thats all. Just put some washers on the center bolts to even the clamping force.. The center bolt covers seal nice and use a silicone gasket, it never goes bad and the covers dont get all twisted up over time.
