Read some books first. Your question is way too general to form any kind of specific response on what gear or car setup to use. Steve Smith Publications sells some books that'll at least get you headed in the right direction. Good luck!

Bryan, don't be afraid to talk your competitors, and ask them what they are running. Most guys at the track will always help with advise and some will go the extra mile and actually help you with some setup basics. Without exception, the guys I race with, will come and help if I'm in a wreck, and they all offer parts and labor just so we can race the next race. Everyone wants to win, but we want it to be won on the track, not with someone's car on the trailer because of some bad luck.

As mentioned above, the Steve Smith books are good, go in the pits, get there a little early before the guys are busy getting ready to race and look at their cars and ask them questions. Go to your Club's inspection day before the season begins, you get an up-close look at all the guys cars and see what the inspectors will be looking for. Lastly, go to the local race shops and see what they reccomend, doing the above will definitely give you a good heads up on how you want to set your car up to start with.
