A sponsor gave me a 305. this will be my first time/year raceing. Is there anything I can do to make this thing run decent for a first timer? the car is a 75 nova. there is a $350 motor claimer.

About all I would do is rebuild it maybe put some cast flattops in it and a HV oilpump and turn the hell out of it keep your oil changed and check your bearings at about halfway if I were going to cam it I would use a cam with a smaller lift so you won't stress your valve train your first yearreliability is very important so you can get seat time so don't go radical on your engine combo a 305 will perform well on a short track but there is no subsitute for C.I.s

I'd probably try something with about .465to .480 lift with about a 108center and run some pretty stout gears I ran a 656 on a 3/8s trackand it did well I prefer glides also be sure and torque the bands and change the filter and screen and use a cooler it'll last well good luck and have fun but be safe don't scrimp on your safety equip a good suit gloves and shoes I had to come out of a burning car once and you don't think you need them until it's to late be safe
