I've heard all kind of reasons the past 13 years..like it makes the dirt lay down better....but the best reason I know of is to keep you from hot lapping during mud packing ...the cars don't turn right real well...LOL

I think you are probably right.....but from what I have seen, sometimes it is better to pack faster so the clumps of clay wont mound. If they mound, it will be a very rough track for the night. I have seen a lot of clay get on the cars and fall into clumps that are run over by the next car and then are packed....ridges are created from this. I think packing the tracks sometimes need to be sped up to get these broken up.

My 2 cents.

I do agree with you Jammin, one thing I hate is the racers or the helpers they let in the car for mud packing want to idle around the track. All that does is bottle-neck the cars behind them. You are supposed to roll the clay down , not spin the tires, also hold a straight line ,not move down when you pass a track official , then move back up after you pass him....I was a track official for 5 yrs
and it was my job to see to it that the track got rolled in properly before the races began. By the way my real job at the track was Tech Inspector..the second most hated person at the track after the Flagman...LOL
