Kemp returns to promotional post at 34 Raceway
WEST BURLINGTON, Iowa (Jan. 31) - Larry Kemp will be back on familiar ground this season, as the new promoter at 34 Raceway in West Burlington.
Kemp promoted and later owned the track in the 1980s, before moving on to run the show at Hawkeye Downs Speed-way in Cedar Rapids and then for a post with the American Speed Association.
"I've gone full circle. It's nice to be back," he said. "The ASA thing was fun but it's hard when you're on the road 20 weekends a year."
"We don't plan any major changes," added Kemp, who has already purchased a home in Burlington. "I know car counts have been good here and I look forward to getting re-acquainted with a lot of people."
The Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models will be on hand for opening night at the Johnny Johnson-owned facility on Saturday, April 12.
The 2003 point season for sanctioned Late Models runs from April 25 through Aug. 24. That division will be joined by sprint cars, modifieds, hobby stocks and thunder cars on regular Saturday night race programs.
"We're looking forward to coming back," Kemp said. "The rules for the cars are already pretty good. What we have to do next is find ways to put more people in the stands."
