Joiner and Watts Got Their First Cruiser Win
Sue DuRoy August 30, 2002 Baton Rouge Raceway
Ricky King led every lap of the first street stock heat and went on to take his first win. Robert Ringo led every lap and took the second heat win for street stock. In the feature Ringo took off in the lead followed by King. Jason Wilks took over second then went after Ringo. Ringo and Wilks sailed around the track nose to tail lap after lap. By the time the white flag was waved Ringo and Wilks had a whole straightaway on the rest of the field. Wilks tried high and low and Ringo held him off and took the win. Wilks finished second, Tommy Cannon third, and Gene Brown fourth. There was a side by side battle for fifth with Elvis Turbville and Ricky King under the checkered flag, Turbville taking fifth.
Tim Moran took the heat win for Pure stock. Eric McCallister led every lap of the feature and scored his first win of the season. Zane Barcelona followed McCallister right on his bumper lap after lap as the two pulled away from the field. McCallister hung on for the win followed by Barcelona, Bo Garig, Tim Moran and Melvin Beucker. The only yellow was when Bo Garig and Troy Dean got together at the front wall.
Jerry Cassano and Darron Carroll shared the heat wins for UMP. Cassano jumped into the lead followed by Carroll. Carroll ran second till he tangled with Schexnayder under the flag stand. Cassano went on to score another win. Conrad Cupit took second, Roy Schnebelen third, Bobby Semple fourth and Tyndale Dean fifth.
Larry Clayton took the heat win for mini stock, but didn't have such good luck in the feature. Clayton led the feature till the two lap sign when he went up in a cloud of blue. Elvis Turbville took over the lead and went on to score the win followed by Cliff Temple, Donna Everett, Reine Whittney and Sidney Persilver.
Butch Jenkins and David Ashley took the Late Model heat wins. David Ashley led all 20laps of the feature and took the win. Eric Courville gave chase every lap but had to settle for second. Kevin Watts took third, Randy Cook fourth and rounding out the top five was Butch Jenkins.
Mickey Joiner at the gas and Dustin Watts with the brake and steering put their big pretty black Lincoln Cruiser in the winners circle for the first time.
