**** Barton wins first of the season at Raceway 7
Conneaut, OH (August 2) - **** Barton from Ashville, NY was the winner of the 25-lap Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model feature event on Friday night at Raceway 7. It was the first feature win of the season for the defending division champion. Also winning feature events on Roberts Trucking Night were Todd Roncaglione from Linesville, PA in the Biscotti's Restaurant and Winery E-Mods, Jim McFadden from Painesville, Ohio in the Fame Manufacturing Street Stocks, and Lee Patrick from Geneva, Ohio in The Bolt Place Hobby Stocks.
Roberts Trucking sponsored the 25-lap Maloney Tool and Mold Late Model feature race, with Dan Armbruster and Paul Davis drawing front row starting positions. After a lap 1 caution for debris on the track, an extended period of green flag racing started with point leader Armbruster leading third starting Dave Lyon. The battle for the lead was intense, as Lyon made efforts to pass. Things at the front really heated up by lap 14, as the pair were now battling race traffic as well as each other. Lyon had been looking inside, but he made a bid on the outside as the two drivers crossed the line in a virtual tie on lap 15. Lyon nosed ahead to lead lap 16 at the line, but the two drivers made contact in turn two. The two cars got hooked together, and they would roll to a stop to bring out the caution flag. Fifth starting **** Barton would inherit the lead at this point, and as green flag resumed it was Rob Blair and Jim Dandy, Jr. battling for second. After a final restart on lap 18, Dandy moved to second and moved in to challenge Barton for the lead. With Barton using the inside groove, Dandy moved high and pulled outside of Barton with laps winding down. Barton was able to win the race to the checkered flag by a fender to score his first feature win of the season worth $3000. Dandy settled for a close second, with Blair finishing third after starting 16th. Chub Frank came from eleventh to finish fourth, as Rick Briggs earned his best finish of the season in fifth. Bruce Hordusky also earned his best season finish in sixth, as Greg Fenno, Jay Watson, Rich Gardner, and Armbruster rounded out the top ten. With 38 entries on hand, heat winners were Frank, Mark Osburn, Watson, and Lyon. Last Chance Race wins went to Ryan Markham and Rick Isadore.
Mike Kinney and Hugo Litwiler led the 20-lap Biscotti's Restaurant and Winery E-Mod feature to the green flag as Kinney led the first lap. Fourth starting Randy Hall moved to the race lead on lap 2, as Kinney and Tim Rhoades tangled on lap 4 to bring out the first yellow flag of the event. Hall continued to lead after a later restart on lap 6, as eleventh starting Todd Roncaglione moved up to challenge Litwiler for second. An extended period of green flag racing developed after a lap 9 restart, as Roncaglione finally took second from Litwiler. Hall had built a lead, but Roncaglione moved in to challenge. With a turn two pass, Roncaglione would take the lead on lap 17. A lap 18 yellow flag bunched the field a final time, but defending division champion Roncaglione would go on to score his first victory of the season. Hall was second, with Litwiler finishing third. Rick Robinson earned his best finish of the season in fourth, with point leader Dale Applebee finishing fifth. Mike Hess was sixth after starting 18th, as Rick Smith, Brian Taft, Rhoades, and Jim Frontz filled the top ten. Litwiler, Roncaglione, and Smith were the heat winners over the 34-car field, as Hess took the Last Chance Race.
Roberts Trucking sponsored the 15-lap Fame Manufacturing Street Stock feature, with Brian Douglas and Dr. John Hobbs on the front row. Douglas took the early lead, but he spun from the lead on lap 3. Mike Beck would inherit the lead on the restart, but he would soon feel a challenge from eighth starting Jim McFadden. McFadden made the pass off of turn two, and would take the lead on lap 5. Several caution periods dominated the late portions of the event, and the race would come to a scary conclusion. Mike Horton had run in the top five throughout most of the event, and he had a bumper slice through his fuel cell causing a large fire. Horton did suffer burns exiting his car and he was transported to the hospital for treatment. The race was called official at this point with 13 laps completed with McFadden awarded the victory, his second victory of the season. Greg Barnes capped a good run from 18th starting position to finish second, and Ken Zimmer scored his best finish of the season in third. Beck was fourth, with fifth going to Ryan Blood. Douglas failed to finish but he will retain a narrow point lead over McFadden and Darrell Bossard who struggled to a 17th place finish. Heat race winners over the 34-car field were McFadden, Blood, and John O'Donnell, and the Last Chance Race was won by Russ Wheeler.
In the 8-lap feature for The Bolt Place Hobby Stocks, Lee Patrick led every lap in winning the feature in his first start in the car normally driven by his daughter. Terry Lavery was second ahead of Scott McFadden, John Sousa, and Dave Harding. Ron Armstrong was sixth and he holds a narrow point lead over Harding. Patrick also won the heat race.
