Path Valley Champions Claim Two of Six Feature Wins

By Walt Cox

Spring Run, PA_ Two defending 2001 champions charged from fourth place starts to claim feature wins as Path Valley Speedway Park completed six full features amid surrounding storms Friday night.

Current champions Scott Ellerman of Landisburg in the PA 305 Sprints and Arlin Brougher of Gettysburg in the modified mini stocks each claimed their third Path Valley win of the year. Brougher took the lead on lap four and then stayed just ahead of two-time champion Ricky Harper to win by a length. Mike Boyer of Jonestown was the night’s first-time winner over a field of 37 in the 270 Sprints, and Pat Klose of Harrisburg led the 600 Sprints non-stop start to finish for his second feature win of the season.

Past champion Butch Brough of Newville took the lead on lap 14 of the Central PA Legends Cars feature and in the final six wide-open laps gained a full turn on the second place finisher. John Rasp of McConnellsburg claimed his fourth win of the season in an action filled four-cylinder thunder car feature with seven cautions and many cars a lap or more down. Mike Beidel in second and Derrick Casner in third finished less than a length behind Rasp after a final one-lap shootout.

Next Friday and Saturday Path Valley holds the annual Canned Food Drive to benefit local food pantries and the Dwarf Cars return for their monthly special feature Friday night. Also on the Friday lineup are the 600 and 270 sprints, the Legends and the V-8 Street Stocks and four-cylinder thunder cars as the mini stocks take their regularly scheduled night off.

Saturday is the Path Valley Summer National rescheduled from July 27 that pays $500 to win for all ‘boxstock’ standard karts at 340 pounds, along with a regular points karts and quads program.

As violent thunderstorms and rumored tornadoes struck adjacent areas, the Path Valley clay stayed soft and smooth through a combined total of 23 heats and features for 123 cars and sprints. “We finished at 11:30 thanks to some great cooperation from all our race teams, and we got to see some absolutely excellent racing,” said promoter Ken Geesey.

The highlight of the night was the 305 Sprint feature, which has been expanded to 25 laps for the full-size economy sprint cars. Ellerman took the lead from Rory Janney at the start of lap three and went non-stop to lap 15 as he built up a full turn lead as Ryan Lynn came from seventh to challenge front row starter Rick Mayberry for the second spot. Through three restarts in the final ten laps Lynn took over the second spot but could only pull within a length of Ellerman. George Johnston took over third with Mayberry and Todd Lynn completing the top five.

“The 305 competition gets stronger every week, and just two weeks ago we replaced an engine,” said Ellerman after his second season win. “Tonight’s win is really special with sponsor Ed Casner here to see it.” The bi-weekly 305 Sprints return to Path Valley Aug. 17.

After the closest finish of the night, less than a car length, 600 Sprint winner Pat Klose said that in one more lap Donnie Hendershot might have passed him. The pill draw for starting inversion put Klose on the pole and he used lapped cars from lap seven on to keep ahead of two-time champion Hendershot. Path Valley’s hard charging “Jims” – Jim Young, Jim Callahan and Jim Brookens filled out the top five. Brookens, who won the Friday before at Path Valley and again Sunday at Lincoln, started in the handicap spot at twelfth.

For Mike Boyer in the #1K King team car the 270 Sprints feature was a steeplechase as he weaved among lapped cars. Boyer lapped ten of the 24-sprint field as he took his first ever Path Valley win. “Furlong caught me enough that I could see him twice, but the track was perfect and I had lots of bite wherever I had to go to pass lapped cars,” he said. The front five were Boyer, Furlong, Steve Lenig, Chad Criswell and points leader Sean Good.

The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. The new phone number at the track for promoter Ken Geesey is 717-349-7111.
