Cole holds on by inches; Parshall sees streak end

Steve Walker figured he needed just a couple more laps. Jay Cole didn't
think Walker needed even that much time. Cole dodged a couple of bullets
Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway Park in Elma, and had just enough to
hold off Walker to claim victory in Sprints.

Jack Parshall Jr. saw his streak in Hobby Stocks end at six straight wins as
defending series champion Jason Tole returned to victory lane, though some
controversy marked the race. Jon Swiglo dominated to win in Modifieds, while
the duo of Luke Brogan and Stormy Glick held on to claim Cruisers victory.

Cole and Donny Fry put on a thrilling battle in their trophy dash, which was
won by Cole. The two resumed the fight in the main event, with Cole
eventually claiming the lead.

That changed on lap 8. Cole got caught behind lapped traffic momentarily
heading into turn 1. He went low, but Fry had already dived to the spot.
Contact between the two sent Fry spinning, handing second place to Gary
Vaugh.

On the restart, Vaugh stopped in turn 4, handing the runner-up position to
Walker. The two engaged in a heated shootout. Walker claimed the lead on lap
12, but Cole came back a lap later to reclaim the top spot and began to pull
away slightly.

With less than five laps to go, the caution came out as Randy Van Aagten's
engine let go in turn 2. Contact on the ensuing restart led to a caution for
debris.

The green flew for the final time with three laps to go. Walker came on
strong, pulling alongside Cole on the last lap. The two took the checkered
flag side-by-side, with Cole hanging on by inches. Behind them were Jeff
Bell, Vaugh, and Fry.

Cole enjoyed the lead battle, but acknowledged he was worried about Walker
at the end. "Steve had a good run, a good car, and he's a good driver," Cole
said. "I knew he was coming. His car was definitely better than mine. I
didn't want it to be one more lap, or even one more turn."

Walker also enjoyed the battle, but wished it could have lasted just a
little longer. "We almost had it," he said. "We needed a couple more laps.
But it was a good, clean race. It was a lot of fun. We just ran out of
laps."

Fry, who noted it felt good to be battling up front, said his incident was
just hard racing. "We just got into it with a lapped car," he said. "Jay had
no place to go. I had gone low, and then Jay went low. I'd seen it coming,
but it was too late to do anything. We tapped. There was nothing we could
do. But I'm not mad. It was just a racing deal."

In Hobby Stock, Brandon Daniel quickly moved up to grab the lead on lap 4
from Wayne Lemmon. Jason Tole followed in Daniel's tire tracks, while
Parshall moved into third place.

As in Sprints, lap 8 proved to be pivotal. As the field headed for turn 1,
Tole passed Daniel for the lead, with Parshall hot on his trail. However,
Daniel swerved low to avoid a lapped car, chopping off Parshall.

In turn 1, Daniel banged into Tole's left door and spun out. Parshall also
spun, as did Rick Milbourne. Since both Daniel and Parshall got into turn 1
hot, both were sent to the back, while Milbourne was put in second behind
Tole.

On the restart Tole and Milbourne broke away, with Tole opening a slight
lead. Further back, Parshall and Daniel quickly moved through traffic.

Tole held on to defeat Milbourne, Kris Asche, Terry Bower, and Jake
Sorenson. Parshall ended up sixth and saw his winning streak end at six,
while Daniel finished eighth.

Afterwards, Tole admitted he was surprised to have won, in part because he
had a broken right rear shock. "I really didn't expect to be able to stay up
front," he said. "The doors opened up for me. I figured my only chance was
to stay as smooth as possible."

While remaining fairly upbeat, Parshall said he should have gotten his
position back after the spin. "(Daniel) caused it," Parshall noted. "I got
hosed. Jason got lucky. He'd better thank Brandon for that one. But hey,
that's racin'."

Daniel admitted Parshall got the raw end of the deal. "I was coming off turn
4," Daniel explained. "I glanced low and saw Jack, then saw the lapped car
ahead. I cut off Jack a little, and I wanted to make sure I would clear the
lapped car going into turn 1. That's when I got into Jason. I probably
should have been more impatient."

For his part, Tole only felt what happened in the incident. "I didn't see
anything-I was in front of it," he said. "I got hit hard in the door, which
knocked me up the track pretty good. When I looked the next time by I saw
them spun out."

As for Parshall's comment of Tole needed to thank Daniel, Tole's response
was "Whatever."

In Modifieds, Swiglo and Josh Muller battled at the beginning, with Swiglo
taking the lead. Under an early yellow, Muller exited the track. On the
restart, Swiglo broke away slightly as a furious battle for second place on
back ensued.

Randy Ward and Don Jenner battled for second place for a while. Behind them,
Greg Dineen, Craig Moore, and Glen Vincent went for fourth.

On lap 16, Moore got into the back of Dineen, spinning both of them out.
Moore was initially sent to the back for causing the yellow, but under
yellow it was determined Dineen had been suffering from a steering problem.
As a result, Moore was put back into his previous position, a move
questioned by some afterwards.

In the end, Swiglo got his season back on track by taking the win over
Jenner, Leroy Lawhead, Moore, and Ward.

Swiglo, who set fast time in Modified qualifying, noted his team has had a
bit of a dry spell. "We had fun tonight," he said. "I'm sure glad to see a
win. We've had bad luck. There's a lot of luck involved with this sport.

"We've always had the car to where it could win. But I usually qualify bad.
Really, you have to qualify good. You need to start up front. We had a long
dry spell, but we did 'er. We qualified first, and that's what did it. We're
back."

Cruisers had a somewhat familiar story. Bob Tillman and Jon Brenneman led
early before losing a right front tire with a handful of laps left. Brogan
and Glick capitalized, and held on to claim victory.

Regular racing resumes next weekend in Elma. Gates open Saturday at 5 p.m.,
with racing around 7.
