O'REILLY AUTO PARTS MID-AMERICA RACING SERIES
I-30 Speedway
Saturday, July 27, 2002

By Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

LITTLE ROCK AR. Bill Frye completed the season sweep of O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series events held this year at the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock. Frye parlayed his pole starting position into nearly a 40 Lap wire to wire win. Jeff Taylor did the lead the first lap, and pressured Frye for most of the race. Frye regained the eight points he lost to Terry Phillips the night before, and put another $3,000 check in his wallet for his 5th series win of the year.

Frye and Taylor shared the front row, and Taylor powered to the lead as the green flag fell. Frye fell in behind, with David Gibson, Terry Phillips and Kenny Merchant making up the early top five. Frye pulled even with Taylor on the second lap, and took the lead coming out of turn four.

The caution flag waved on lap three as Dewaine Hottinger and Gary Stolba tangled in turn two. Merchant fired by Phillips on the restart, taking fourth, then Merchant worked under Gibson for third in turn four on the fourth circuit. Phillips followed suit, making his way past Gibson on lap six.

The caution flag waved again on lap eight, but this time not for any action on the track. The ambulance was required in the pits, and the race was slowed to allow it to make its way from the infield to the pit area.

Gibson slipped back on the restart, and Odie Green took over the fifth spot after the field sorted. Green challenged Phillips for the fourth spot, as the pair went side by side on lap 10. Out front, Frye was able to hold a five carlength lead over Taylor by lap 12.

Kenny Merchant bypassed Jeff Taylor for the second spot on lap 13, then the pair dueled back and forth with Taylor pulling even on several occasions. Frye was starting to see back markers by lap 22, and was in traffic by lap 25.

Once in traffic, Jeff Taylor was able to re-take second from Merchant in turn two as the pair were negotiating slower cars. Keith Craft brought out the events final caution on lap 29, as he had pulled up in turn two.

Phillips used the outside line to power into third on the restart, but Merchant regained third from Phillips in turn four on lap 33. Green was also able to regain his spot, getting fourth back on the next lap.

Bill Frye was able to keep Jeff Taylor at bay for the remainder of the laps and came home with the win. Taylor settled for second with Kenny Merchant, Odie Green, and Terry Phillips making up the top five. Leslie Essary, Mike Bowers, Jeff Floyd, Joey Mack, and Tommy Surrett rounded out the top ten.
