O'REILLY AUTO PARTS MID-AMERICA RACING SERIES

By Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

BOLIVAR MO. Bill Frye completed the weekend sweep of O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series events over the weekend. Frye's job was far from easy this night however, as he came from the 5th row outside starting position. Frye was finally able to overcome Terry Phillips on the 27th lap to take the lead for good, and go the rest of the way en route to the $3,000 win.

For the second consecutive night, Terry Phillips held the pole, with Wendell Wallace to his outside. Phillips was able to move to the lead as the green came out with Wallace, Rex McCroskey, Jeff Taylor and Jeff Floyd trailing. Phillips and Wallace dueled side by side on the second lap. Brad Looney moved under Floyd to take over the fifth position in turn four on lap three.

Phillips was working the extreme high side of the track, right up against the wall, then the caution flag waved as Jason Snodgrass and Mike Harris tangled in turn four. Jeff Taylor moved past McCroskey for third in turn four on the sixth lap, while out front Phillips had slipped out to a five carlength advantage by lap seven. The front pair were back to nose to tail racing by lap 10, and Taylor had joined them by lap 12.

The frontrunners were working traffic by lap 13. Bill Frye joined the top five, getting around Looney in turn four on lap 14. Wallace slipped under Phillips to the lead on lap 17, then Taylor rocketed under Phillips on the next go round. On lap 19, disaster struck Wallace. Wallace and a lapped car made contact going into turn three, and Wallace was into the wall, ending his night. The O'Reilly M.A.R.S. series does not race to the yellow, so Terry Phillips was again the official race leader on the restart with Wallace retiring to the pits.

The race restarted with Phillips taking the lead over Taylor, and Frye moving to third. A torrid battle for the lead ensued. Frye moved past Taylor for second on lap 19. Those two swapped second back and forth over the next two laps, then Frye established the spot on lap 22. Frye would get tremendous runs off turn two, but Phillips always had just enough momentum to slide back up in front of Frye.

This continued until lap 27, when Frye finally was able to clear Phillips as the pair came off turn two again. Once in the lead Frye started to build a lead. Taylor got under Phillips for the second spot in turn two on lap 29, but Frye was out front by 10 carlengths by lap 32.

Taylor and Phillips were able to close back in by lap 36, and Taylor got several looks under Frye for the lead. The pair went side by side on lap 37 and then again on lap 38, but Bill Frye was able to come home with the win. Jeff Taylor settled for second with Terry Phillips, Leslie Essary, and Brad Looney making up the top five. Jeff Floyd, Rex McCroskey, Raymond Merrill, Steve Rushin, and Shane Essary rounded out the top ten.
