O'REILLY AUTO PARTS MID-AMERICA RACING SERIES
Kentucky Lake Motor Speedway
Saturday, July 6, 2002
By Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

GILBERTSVILLE KY. Wendell Wallace picked up his second O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series win of the weekend. It was the same song, second verse as Wallace battled Bill Frye for the second straight night. Once again, Frye claimed the early lead, only to see Wallace take command, this night on lap 13. Wallace grabbed another $3,000 check for his win.
Frye was the top qualifier of the evening, and shared the front row with Donnie Barnhart. Frye shot to the lead with Wallace coming from row two to take second with Barnhart third. The race barely got started when the caution flag flew on the second lap for Jeff Floyd and Gary Stolba, who got together in turn four.
A five car melee prevented the race from restarting, but when the cars did go back to green Frye and Wallace broke away from the field, taking a 10 carlenght advantage over Randy Sellers, who had worked his way to third on the restart.
Wallace had been working Frye low, but changed his tactic to the high side on lap six, and pulled even with Frye on several occasions. Leslie Essary moved to the fifth spot on lap six, but the caution flag waved again the next lap for Terry Phillips, who had gotten turned around in turn three.
Essary used the restart to best Barnhart for fourth. Wallace and Frye were dueling side by side again on lap 11, then Wallace ducked low in turn two on lap 13, finally making the pass on Frye stick. It didn't take Wallace long to start seeing traffic, and was facing slower cars by lap 15. Wallace worked the traffic to perfection, and had pulled out to a ten carlength advantage by lap 20.
The caution waved again on lap 21 for David Gibson, who had suffered a flat tire and had gotten into the turn two wall.
Essary was the master of the restarts, getting past Sellers for third. Kevin Claycomb moved by Sellers for the fourth spot on lap 23, but the caution flag waved again, this time for Tim Brown who had gotten turned around on the backstretch. During the caution Claycomb pitted his car for the night.
Dewaine Hottinger inherited the fifth spot, then went three wide with Essary and Bobby Dietz. Dietz shot into contention, and he and Essary battled for the third spot on lap 26. Dietz got the better of Essary for third on lap 28, then the caution flew again on lap 30 as Randy Sellers pulled up in turn four.
This time, the restart wasn't kind to Leslie Essary, as he fell out of the top five when the green flag waved. Deitz challenged Frye for second, getting the spot on lap 31. Frye was back around Dietz on the next circuit. John Tindall brought out the final caution on lap 33 with a flat tire.
Terry Phillips took the fifth spot on the restart, then Hottinger got under Dietz, taking over third on lap 34. Phillips followed suit, taking fourth from Dietz in turn two on lap 36. Wallace opened a 10 carlength advantage and sailed the rest of the way to the checkers.
Wendell Wallace claimed his fourth win of the season with Bill Frye second. Dewaine Hottinger recorded his best career M.A.R.S. finish with the third. Terry Phillips and Bobby Dietz made up the top five. David Gibson, Leslie Essary, Jeff Floyd, Joey Mack, and Todd Hall rounded out the top ten.
