O'REILLY AUTO PARTS MID-AMERICA RACING SERIES
Tri-State Speedway

By Larry Olson; Mountain Home, AR

POCOLA OK. Terry Phillips won his second O'Reilly Auto Parts Mid-America Racing Series win of the year. Phillips has been dominant over the last four races, but luck cost him two possible feature wins. Phillips left nothing to doubt Saturday at the Tri-State Speedway leading all 40 laps in taking the $3,000 win.

Donnie Barnhart was the top qualifier, and held the pole, with Phillips to his outside. The pair raced side by side for most of the first lap before Phillips gained the advantage in turn four moving to the lead. Phillips eased out to a five carlength advantage by lap two as Barnhart, Jeff Taylor, David Gibson, and Bill Frye fell in behind Phillips.

Frye used the high side of the track to move past Gibson in turn four on the fourth lap. Taylor was tight, looking under Barnhart in the corners by lap seven. Phillips had opened a half straightaway margin by lap 10, but the yellow flag slowed his pace as debris was spotted in turn two.

Taylor got the best of Barnhart on the restart, moving to the second spot. Frye got by Barnhart for third in turn two on lap 11. Out front, Phillips had built a 15 carlength lead by lap 15. Phillips was starting to work traffic by lap 20, and the field was able to close back up on him. The caution flag was his friend again on lap 21, as Jerry Buck was stopped in turn two.

Leslie Essary moved past David Gibson on the restart, taking the fifth spot. Essary improved to fourth, getting past Barnhart in turn two on lap 26. Phillips was back out to a big lead again by lap 30, but was starting to get back into traffic. Taylor was able to chop Phillips lead down to five carlengths as Phillips and Dan Leatherman made contact as Phillips was lapping him.

Phillips, Taylor, and Frye were nose to tail by lap 35. This time Frye and Taylor made contact, with Frye nearly spinning. Frye recovered, and maintained his position. Phillips once again was having trouble will slower cars, and Taylor was right on his back bumper. Phillips finally cleared the cars on the white flag lap, and came home with the win.

Terry Phillips took the win with Jeff Taylor, Bill Frye, Leslie Essary, and Donnie Barnhart making up the top five. Raymond Merrill, Steve Rushin, David Gibson, Mike Bowers, and Justin Fulton rounded out the top ten.
