I.M.C.A. Speedway Motors Super Nationals set
for 20th run Sept. 2-7 at Boone
BOONE, Iowa (June 20) – The stage is set for an-other record-breaking I.M.C.A. Speedway Motors Super Nationals.
The 20th annual event will run Monday through Sat-urday, Sept. 2-7 at the Boone, Iowa, Speedway.
Last year’s Super Nationals saw new car count rec-ords, with 725 cars, including 420 I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds, in the five divisions. Drivers from 26 differ-ent states competed, another all-time best in the history of America’s Racin’ Va-cation.
“We’re very excited about the upcoming 20th Super Nationals,” said I.M.C.A. Vice President of Operations Brett Root. “This event just seems to get bigger and better every year.”
Two changes have been made in the weekly race schedule in place since 1997.
The Deery Brothers Summer Series for I.M.C.A. Sunoco Late Models, lost to a deluge of rain on Friday last year, moves to opening night this time around. The Jackpot Junction Tour for I.M.C.A. Sprint Cars moves up two nights, from Thursday to Tuesday evening.
Feature races for the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds, I.M.C.A. Sunoco Stock Cars and I.M.C.A. Hobby Stocks remain on Saturday, along with last-chance qualifying for the Modifieds, the Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial Race of Champi-ons for the Modi-fieds and the Sunoco Race Fuels Stock Car Race of Champions.
The Efkamp race has been expanded this year, from 12 cars running 12 laps to 20 cars and 20 laps.
“We thought the Dirt Works Ron Efkamp Memorial race would be the race to modify to celebrate the anni-versary. Race of Champions’ qualifying is limited to those who have supported I.M.C.A. on a weekly basis throughout 2002 and those who have supported the Su-per Nationals over the last 20 years as well,” Root said. “Twenty cars for 20 laps will be very exciting. Who knows, we may throw in a surprise on how we decide the starting order for a little excitement as well.”
Making the Efkamp Field pays at least $100 to each qualifier.
Pit gates open and registration begins at 11 a.m., with hot laps at 4 p.m. and racing at 5 p.m. each day Monday through Friday. Pits open and registration starts at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with pre-race ceremonies at 3 p.m. and racing at 4 p.m.
Modified drivers can draw as early as Monday for Wednesday’s heat races, in an effort to reduce the amount of time it takes them to register and draw for their first day of qualifying. They’ll draw for Thursday and Friday qualifying each of those days.
A custom-built draw apparatus that holds as many as 700 pills should accommodate all of the numbers re-quired to con-duct the daily Modified draw.
The new Super Nationals queen will be crowned at the start of Saturday’s program. Information about camping at the speedway is available by calling (515) 987-1220.
