JUVEN TOPS IN STREETS AT THE CREEK.
By Jeff Bruhn
Another beautiful Saturday night found a great crowd and great racing as Rogerís Grove City Liquor sponsored the nights activities as we honored our fathers on Fatherís Day weekend.
Tim Juven took off from the outside pole and never looked back as he picked up the Wissota Street Stock feature at the creek. The feature nearly went wire to wire with the exception of a yellow on lap four where Frank Zoolie looped his number 77 machine around. Zoolie would later be blacked flag as his car had apparent handling problems and nearly spun out taking out the leaders. Juven survived the near scare and the pressure from Brandon Larson of Litchfield who continued his outstanding season. Larson piloted his chevrolet high and low trying to get Jay Hedtke to take over the second position. Hedtke and Larson were door to door for much of the 15 lap feature before Larson worked the low side to come home second, Charlie Novak was third with Doug Frederick fourth and Hedtke fifth.
The Wissota super stock feature found itself with early fireworks as what started out with a typical feature took a twist six laps into the event. Greg Bent of Litchfield started on the pole flanked by Zach Schultz of Atwater. Bent worked his way to an early lead before the yellow came out as Jeremy Snow jumped the cushion in turn one and found himself sideways. On the restart, Bent lead Schultz and Steve Beach of Long Prairie to the green. Beach with a great jump passed Schultz for the second spot. Beach then set his sights on Bent and took the top position away for the lap. As Beach and Bent battled for position Beach put a slide job on Bent who was up on the cushion in turn one with Bent losing the cushion and causing his Spectrum Coatings number 2 to become upset and spin out. Hereís where the fireworks start. The decision on the track was that Beach would be sent to the rear of the field, and Bent would regain the top spot. On the restart Matt Sinna of Zimmerman got the jump and led the remaining eight laps to pick up his first feature of the year. Sinna worked his car on the top side to keep the field at bay. Sinna was followed by Chris Groth of Plymouth, Beach worked his way through the field to finish third, Scott Schmit was fourth and Tom Benesch fifth.
A wild ride for A.J. Forcier brought out the red flag. Forcier, a rookie driver this year was having one of his best runs of the year, when he went into the high banks of turn 3 and 4 at the CREEK when an apparent right rear axel snapped. As the tire ended up in the catch fence, Forcierís racecar dug in and started a series of violent barrel rolls with the car coming to rest drivers door down. As rescue personnel and track officials arrived, Forcier was able to walk away.
After the race went back green, Gary ďThe Gasman ď Huseman took over the front spot for the four laps as he battled back and forth with Mike Christenson of Hutchinson. Christenson took over on lap eight and lead the rest of the way to pick up the feature win. Huseman ended up third as he went high coming out of four as Cary Schultz got by for second. Brandon Schultz was fourth and Gus Gatewood was fifth in the best finish of the year for the rookie driver.
The Wissota mod 4ís had a tough time getting the feature started, but put on a great show as they went green, white, checkers to get the job done with a last lap wreck that made the scorers job a nightmare. Co-National champion Steve Johnson was on the pole with Brady Dyrdahl making the pull from Grand Rapids for the night on the outside. Dyrdahl led from start to finish as the race then became to see who would finish second. Johnson held down the second spot for the first half of the race before being caught by the other half of the Co-National champion Dustin Zieske. Zieske went on to finish second with Matt Halls third Johnson was fourth and Joel Jorgenson in the pink panther 0h 0h machine was fifth.
Lonnie Walz of Big Lake, picked up the win in the Midwest Modified feature as he took over the front spot from fan favorite Jim Merkins. Merkins, who was featured as the driver of the week had the machine to beat early on before his tires went away. Walz was followed to the line by Merkins. Chuck Chesler continued his good season with yet another top five finishing third. Mark Deering finished fourth with a solid run that should move him up in points as Dustin Johanneck finished ninth on the night.
Promoter Susie Johnson honored her father with a gift during intermission for all the support, hard work and love that he has provided throughout the years. Many of the racers expressed the same sentiment throughout the evening.
