Winker is new owner, promoter at Wilmot Speedway
WILMOT, Wis. (May 15) - New owner and promoter Marie Winker already knows her way around Wilmot Speed-way.
Winker has been a regular at the 1/3 mile clay oval, selling race car parts at the track and watching her husband and son race in the local sprint car class.
Her purchase of the track, from Andy Calin, was completed on May 8. Winker has spent much of the past week con-tacting and contracting with sponsors and food and beverage distributors, and overseeing the facility’s new red, white and blue paint job.
“Promoting a race track is something my husband Allen, who died last year, and I wanted to do years ago,” Winker said. “I feel that promoters who haven’t been behind the scene don’t really understand racing.”
“We want Wilmot Speedway to be a family-oriented place, where the grandstands are full and everyone is having a good time,” she added.
Both the I.M.C.A.-sanctioned Modified and Hobby Stock divisions return to regular Saturday night race programs at Wilmot, where the season opens with a two-day special May 25-26.
Gates open at 5 p.m., hot laps are at 6 p.m. and racing starts at 7 p.m. both nights.
“All the veteran officials will be back this year and that’s a real plus,” Winker said.
A pre-season tech inspection session for all classes at Wilmot will be held this Saturday, May 18.
