Melis Monopolizes Opening Night EWSC Mod Action,
Schmidt Doesn't Miss a Beat in Limited Late Action!
By Sheila Karstaedt

May 4, 2002; Plymouth, WI - Tim Melis, Plymouth, won the EWSC Miller Light Season Opener 30-lap A-Main at

the Sheboygan County Fair Park, sponsored by Sheboygan Beverage.

Glenbeulah's Gary Laack took the lead from the pole until lap 3 when Barry Maas, Cascade, took over

control. By lap 15, Maas was trying to weave his way through lapped traffic when Laack went by him to take

back the lead. While Laack and Maas were racing their way through the traffic, Melis was easily making his

way through the traffic and took over the reigns on lap 19.

The field saw the first and only caution of the race when the ride of West Bend's Paul Pokorski, who was

running in 4th and closing in on the leaders, came to a halt in turn 3. Pokorski retired to the pits with

mechanical problems and would not return to the track. On the restart it was Melis, Laack, Maas, Butch

Hafemann, Campbellsport, and Kiel's Billy Kreutz. Melis would lead them all to the line and claim the first

A-Main checkered flag of the 2002 season. Trailing Melis across the line was Laack, Hafemann, Kreutz,

and KenJay Fiedler, Sheboygan Falls.

The 15 lap Winged Super Modified B-Main saw Milwaukee's Leroy Ostrowski take the lead and go flag to

flag to take the win. Following Ostrowski to the line was Billy Hafemann, Cedar Grove, Campbellsport's

Robert Enders, Dave Deicher, Plymouth, and Plymouth's Tim McMullen.

Fast time was claimed by Fiedler with a lap of 13.988 seconds.

In Limited Late Model Action, the 2001 track champion, Cedar Grove's Charlie Schmidt, found his way

to winners circle following the feature event.

Henry Dickmann, Sheboygan, took control from the outside pole position. By lap 5, he was encountering

lapped traffic. On lap 11, Dickmann was off the pace and would go in to the pits for a flat tire handing the lead

over to Sheboygan Falls Richard Hed.

The yellow flag would fly on lap 13 for debris on the track. After track personnel cleaned up the track, Hed

would set the pace in front of Howie Weiss, Glenbeulah, Schmidt, Oostburg's Nate Winkel, and Dave

Schaetzer, Sheboygan Falls. Schmidt got a great start and was running door to door with Hed down the

backstretch after the restart. At the line on lap 14, Schmidt found himself being chased by the rest of the field.

The caution flag would be waved twice again. Once on lap 20 for debris and also on lap 21 for the car of

Sheboygan's Larry Berg that came to rest in turn 1.

Schmidt would lead Hed, Weiss, Winkel, and Tim Carmen, Sheboygan Falls to the stripe on the restart.

Starting in the last row and now reeling in the leaders, Oostburg's JJ Walvoord was on a mission. When the

checkered flag fell, Schmidt crossed the line in front of Hed, Winkel, Walvoord, and Weiss.

Fast time was set by Rick Thompson, Campbellsport.

The Super Stock feature saw Sheboygan's Bob Duncan pull out to an early start. The field was slowed

by the caution flag, on lap 2, for the car of Jeff Leonhard, Sheboygan, that stopped on the track. The restart

saw Duncan, Plymouth's Don Kulow, Jim Bailey, Oostburg, Plymouth's Kyle Odekirk, and Brian Kaat,

Sheboygan's Brian Goetsch spun on lap 6 and brought out the yellow flag. Duncan led the field on the

restart. On lap 12, Duncan spun and relinquished the lead to Kulow. On lap 17, Kulow and Ben Schmidt, Kiel,

were running side by side and Schmidt would take the lead on lap 18. Following Schmidt across the line was

Plymouth's Brian Gilles, Kulow, Luke Scholten, Oostburg, and Sheboygan Falls Brian Genske.

The Super Stock semi-feature saw Chad Ninmer, Sheboygan, take the lead from the pole. Sheboygan's

Tony Ehaney took over control on lap 2 until he bobbled on lap 3 and lost the lead to back to Ninmer.

The cars of Paul Perronne, Plymouth and Plymouth's Adam/Cory Brasser got tangled together in turn 2,

bringing out the caution. On the restart it would be Ninmer, Mike Humphrey, Sheboygan, Elkhart Lake's John

Dirks, Steve Schad, Cleveland, and Sheboygan's Mike TeStroete.

On lap 6, Ninmer spun and collected the car of Humphrey allowing Dirks to take over. After another

caution on lap 12 for the spin of TeStroete, Dirks would claim the win. Following Dirks was Schad, Abe

Meinnert, Elkhart Lake, Perronne, and Sheboygan's Mike Damrow.

Fast time was set by Brian Gilles.

The 15 lap All American Mighty 4's saw 16 cars take to the track. Tim Sauter, Plymouth, took the lead

and by lap 4 was in lapped traffic. The caution flag flew on lap 8 for the car of Tim Anderson, that flipped in

turn 4. Anderson was unhurt. On the restart it was Sauter, Sheboygan Falls Jeremy Sauter, Duane Dippel,

Plymouth, Brian Stern, and Plymouth's Joe Miller/Tyler Elias.

T. Sauter claimed the checkered flag followed by J. Sauter, Dippel, Miller/Elias, and Stern.
