Frey & Guss Jr. Score West Liberty

Raceway NASCAR Wins

NASCAR Racing Series action returned to the West Liberty Raceway on Saturday night following a week off due to a rainout on Saturday, April 27th. The Saturday, May 4th racing program included makeup features from the rain shortened program on April 20th plus a full program in all four divisions. The makeup features were run in the Iowa Illinois Taylor Insulation Late Model and Hobby Stock divisions.

The regularly scheduled Late Model feature was the last feature of the night and the 25 lap main event provided the fans with plenty of action. Ray Guss Jr. scored his second win in four tries at the West Liberty Raceway in 2002. Guss Started in the fourth row and was able to pass high or low on the wide track on his way to the front. Guss caught race leader Todd Davis on the 8th lap. With Guss setting up a challenge for the race lead the race was red flagged following an incident in turn one that saw the car of Nick Marolf end up on his top. Marolf was uninjured in the rollover, Steve Boley was also sidelined in the accident. On the restart Guss was able to move by Davis and take command, as the laps wound down the race was for second. Sonny Findling came on very strong late in the race and was able to take the checkers just ahead of Davis. Brian Harris and Dave Eckrich rounded out the top five. The Makeup feature was run early in the night and the race belonged to Skip Frey. The makeup feature went flag to flag with Frey taking the lead early and easily outdistancing the 28 car starting field. Steve Boley out raced Denny Eckrich for second in the first Late Model feature.

The Miller Time Modified feature was won by Darrell Brick on Saturday night. Brick put his number 22 in the high groove and was able to move to the front quickly from his third row start. Brick scored the win by a comfortable margin over Rick Hixson, who was able to take second by a matter of a few feet over a strong finishing Ron Barker. Brick survived several restarts in route to the 20 lap feature win.

The DADCO/Parker Stores Pro Stock feature was a family affair with the Simpson boys taking the checkers with a one two finish. Chad Simpson took the lead early on the way to the win. Chris Simpson battled through the pack and worked into second late in the race to make the finish a Simpson sweep. Matt Bodman finished a close third ahead of Norman Bean.

The NASCAR Hobby Stocks performed double duty on Saturday night with Todd Hansen scoring the win in the regularly scheduled main event. Hansen caught race leader Darren Voss near the midway point of the race and took the lead on his way to his first win of the young season. Matt Fulton came from the sixth row to take second ahead of Voss. The Hobby Stock makeup feature was won by young Davey Elliott of Moscow, Iowa. Elliott emerged from a pack of contenders late in the race score the win over Dan Albright and Jeremie Thompson.

NASCAR racing will continue Saturday, May 11th at the West Liberty Raceway with a full program plus the makeup feature events for the Pro Stock and Modified classes. Racing will get underway at 7 p.m.
