They’re baaaack!…..Yes, the Sprints on Dirt returned to Hartford Speedway Park Friday night for their season opener and all seems right in the world of Michigan sprint car racing. Duane Turner’s 360 series also drew such Ohio sprint stars at Kevin Bloomstrand, Ronnie Beal and Kyle Sauder to the big ˝ mile. Sauder, the 360 record holder at Hartford and winner of numerous features here, gave his many fans a thrill as he used some low moves to overtake a super-fast Ben Rutan midway through the 20 lap SOD feature. Driving a Kriner powered Maxim, Sauder usually runs right at the wall at Hartford, but Friday he dipped low in turns 3 and 4 on laps 10, 11, and 12 and finally pulled even with Rutan on the back stretch. A low pass in turn 3 put him ahead for good on lap 13. Rutan took second ahead of a hard charging Mark Stemen. Dustin Daggett scored fourth ahead of Aaron Call, Steve Irwin, Mike Miller and Terry Wilber.
Sauder also won heat 1 over Wayne Morrison, while Daggett took heat 2 ahead of Stemen. Call took heat 3 in front of Rutan. The SOD Sprinters return Wed., July 3 with Fireworks, Super Stocks and Factory Stocks.
She’s been in the top 5 in every feature since the season opened, and everyone knew it was just a matter of time before Kelli Jo Hofacker would score a Hartford Factory Stock feature win. With a smooth, patient style learned on local asphalt tracks, Hofacker inherited the lead in the 20 lap feature as leader Mark Lambrecht retired on a lap 14 yellow. With Mike Hoffman, Jesse Scott and track champ Mike Wells swarming on her bumper, the Grand Junction driver ran a smooth middle line to the checkered flag with Hoffman, Scott, Wells and Chris May following. Scott copped the “B” feature while May, Phil Ausra, and Hoffman scored heat wins.
IMCA Mods ran two heats with Jeff Sayles taking the first over Adam Terry and JR Hotovy winning the second over Curt Spalding. The 20 lap Mod feature only had one lead change, and it was permanent as Hotovy got by Sayles on lap 6 and held on to take the win over Brett Bartels, Sayles, Greg Socha and Ryan Disterheft.
This week Friday, May 10, will see the return of the American Late Model Series – ALMS- as the “The World’s Most Powerful Stock Cars” bring UMP style excitement to Hartford. Super Stocks and Factory Stocks are also on the bill and you can “Stock UP” for only $13 at the gate.
May 17 is Autograph/Meet the Driver Night”, featuring all four classes of competition for a night of “Dirt Track Racing at it’s Best!”
