Harmon celebrates, then gets back to work at Bellmead Speedway
BELLMEAD, Texas (April 25) – Philip Harmon spent much of Wednesday night watching an open practice session at Bellmead Speedway.
He celebrated his 52nd birthday by sleeping late this morning, then got back to work. Harmon is the promoter of the 3/8 mile dirt track and has a list of projects to be completed in time for opening night on May 4.
“We hoped to see the track open back up. It’s been closed for two years and there’s been a lot of talk on the street by other people wishing it would,” he said. “We’d heard it had been sold and would re-open. When that didn’t happen, my sons had a great idea that emerged into the Bellmead Speedway.”
Involved in the sport for most of the last 35 years, Harmon competes at Heart O’Texas Speedway himself and helps sponsor cars driven by five other racers.
His sons Malcolm and Daniel race in the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modified division. Another son, James, competes with Harmon in the mini-stock class at HO’T.
Sanctioned Modifieds and Stock Cars will run Saturdays at Bellmead this season and local drivers are among those who have volunteered time, equipment and expertise to get the former Waco-Bellmead Raceway in shape.
“My sons, friends and local drivers are anxious to see the race track re-open,” Harmon said. “We know we have to build the crowd back up first and we’ll increase the purse as the crowd gets bigger. If they support me with the cars, the fans will be there and the pay scale will go up.”
Crowns have been leveled off the racing surface and the soft spot left when electrical lines were laid in has been packed in.
Drainage pipes and new dirt have been added to eliminate standing water in the infield. A new PA system is in place for both the grandstand and pits, and the new pit shack is located closer to the line-up area.
Points races for the I.M.C.A. divisions at Bellmead Speedway run through the last weekend of September. Support classes include the winged modifieds, street stocks, pure stocks, mini-stocks, junior mini-stocks and cruisers.
A second practice night is scheduled for May 1.
