Brett Mann must have a lead cast on his injured foot. He just couldn’t seem to lift as he staked his claim to the high side and blew by Boston Reid and Tim Norman on the first lap of the 30 lap GLOSS feature at Hartford Speedway Park Friday. Still recovering from his shattered driveshaft mishap of opening night, Mann rode the rim even as Reid took the low route to the front on lap 4. It was a classic hi-low battle for 18 laps till Mann got back around Reid for good on lap 22 and with some electrifying moves in traffic, Mann held off Reid for the win. Norman was third after spinning on lap two and re-starting on the tail. Ken Mackey was fourth ahead of Van Gurley Jr., Chuck Wilson, Raymond Shank and Carl Fry.
Norman took the dash over Reid, Mann, Shank and Mackey. The “B” feature went to Ben Rutan over Fry, Dan Hill, Greg Dayney, and Corey Bevard. Heats were won by Norman over Steve Irwin, Reid over Shank and Mann over Gurley. Friday marked the opening of the Great Lakes Outlaw Sprint Series’ season. Great show guys!
The Hartford Super Stocks have evolved this year into an exciting class more closely related to iron block late models, and they are fast! Last year’s track champ Mark Wagner gave notice that he is again the man to beat as he lapped the entire field in their 20 lap feature, finishing ahead of Randy Hauch, Ron Wagner, Shawn McLaughlin and David Mortenson. Wagner also took the only heat over Hauch.
Close competition is what IMCA Modified racing is all about and on the Hartford “wide, wide oval” three-wide is the norm, with five wide a possibility. From his outside pole position, Eau Claire’s “Flyin Ryan” Disterheft led the feature action for 18 laps until Todd Feutz took over to claim the win over Joey Baker, Curt Spalding, Disterheft and JR Hotovy. Heats went to Hotovy over Brett Bartles, and Spalding over Disterheft.
This week Friday, April 26, a ten dollar bill will get you “Dirt Track Racing at its Best” with Open Sprints, Super Stocks and Factory Stocks. The SOD Sprints will light up the big track Friday, May 3 with IMCA Mods and Factory Stockers.
