MARCH 30, 2001 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TOMKINS WINS FIRST DIRT MODIFIED FEATURE, STUHLER 100TH LATE MODEL FEATURE

HAGERSTOWN, MD - Gary Tomkins of Clifton Springs NY, made his first
visit to
the Hagerstown Speedway for the Advance Auto Parts Modified Super
DIRT Series
one he will never forget. It probably won't be his last either
as he beat the
best in the business winning his first Super Dirt Series
race on Saturday
night. Tomkins started 18th in the 30-car field and tracked
down Bob
McCreadie by the 45th lap to take the lead and led the rest of
the way to
pick-up the biggest win of his career.

"Boy, I love this track," said Tomkins as he climbed out of his Honeoye

Auto Parts-Auto Value-Red Parker Excavating/Bicknell/Mastin car in Victory

Lane. "Its unbelievable. The last ten laps I was worried that the tires
might
blow or run out of gas. Man this feels good." Tompkins pocketed $6,000
for
the win.

While Tomkins was winning his first race at Hagerstown, veteran Gary

Stuhler of Greencastle, PA fought off Davey Johnson early in the race to
lead
every lap to capture his 100th career win in the 25-lap late model
feature.

"Its really good to be here. I knew Davey (Johnson) would
be hard to beat
and DJ (Myers) was right behind me there at the end." said
Stuhler. "We've
had a lot of good car owners over the years and I want
to thank Glenn
(Ninninger) for the ride tonight."

The 100–lap Super DIRT Series modified feature started off the way
that
everyone expected as polesitter Bob McCreadie and Brett Hearn battled
it out
for the lead. McCreadie led the first two laps before Hearn went
to the
outside to pass both Jeff Strunk and McCreadie for the lead. After
running
side-by-side with Hearn for several laps, McCreadie regained the
top spot on
lap 15 as ninth starting Billy Decker moved into third. On
lap 19, the
leaders began to put the slower cars a lap down and three laps
later the
first caution was waved.

On the restart, McCreadie pulled
away from the field as Tomkins quietly
broke into the top ten. Tomkins
began to pick up the pace and by lap 29 was
on the bumper of Ron Smoker
in fifth. As McCreadie continued to open his lead
over Hearn, Tomkins poured
it on blasting his way past Smoker, Decker and
Hearn in two laps to move
into second on lap 31. On lap 39, the second
caution was waved wiping out
McCreadie's large lead. After four laps under
caution, the green was waved
and Tomkins took off after McCreadie. Within two
laps on lap 45, Tomkins
passed McCreadie on the outside for the lead. Once in
front, Tomkins began
to pull away and by lap 57, had a 10-car length lead
over McCreadie as
he entered lapped traffic.

As Tomkins set the pace in front, McCreadie,
Tim Fuller and Alan Johnson
began battling it out for second. On lap 70,
20th starting Tim McCreadie
joined the three drivers in the battle for
second. Going three and four wide,
the four drivers battled it out for
second and on lap 83, Tim McCreadie went
too hard into the first turn to
bring out the third and final caution of the
race wiping out Tomkins large
lead. Tomkins was too much on the restart and
was able to hold off B. McCreadie
to win the 100-lap opener of the Super DIRT
Series by five car lengths.
B. McCreadie was second with Alan Johnson, Fuller
and Decker rounding out
the top five. Last years winner Steve Paine was next
with Jeff Strunk,
Tim McCreadie, Frankie Caprara and Smoker finishing out the
top ten. Heat
winners for the 56 entries were Chuck Bower, Paine, Fuller,
Hearn and Jamie
Mills. Bobby Varin, Pat Ward and Jerry Higbie won the
consolations. Billy
Decker set fast time and a new one lap track record of
19.275 seconds.

In the late models, Gary Stuhler and Davey Johnson took the green from

the front row with Stuhler edging out in front for the lead. Johnson pulled

even with Stuhler several times the first four laps before Stuhler moved
out
in front for good. Charlie Schaffer began to pressure Johnson for second
as D
J Myers joined in the chase. On lap 10, Johnson, Schaffer and Myers
went
three wide for second with Myers coming out in second on lap 11 with
Johnson
and Schaffer falling in behind. While Myers was battling it out
for second,
Stuhler had opened a large lead and by lap 20, was putting
the slower cars a
lap down. As Stuhler threaded his way through the slower
cars, Myers was able
to close in on Stuhler. But time ran out as Stuhler
picked up his second win
of the year by eight car lengths. Following Stuhler,
Myers and Johnson, was
10th starting Nathan Durboraw who came on strong
at the end to pass Schaffer
for fourth with five laps remaining. Finishing
out the top ten were Marvin
Winters, Wesley Bonebrake, Scott Andrews, 20th
starting Devin Friese and 22nd
starting Doug Burkholder. Heat winners for
the 38 late models were Stuhler,
Johnson, Jim Bernheisel and Jere Wierman.
Rick Workman and Burkholder won the
consolations.

Next Saturday night, it will be Fan Appreciation Night with $6.00 General

admission for adults. The ITSI late models, Hoosier Tires Mid-Atlantic late

model sportsman and Ernie's Salvage Yard pure stocks will be in action.
Race
Time is 6 P.M.
