Simeon Brothers Take Street Stock heats and Battle for Feature
Sue DuRoy September 29, 2001 Pike County Speedway
Randy Brownell jumped right into the lead of the pure stock feature and led every lap and took the win. Darrell Guy moved up to second and gave chase but couldn't get Brownell and had to settle for second. Walter Perry came through the field to finish third. On the last lap coming out of four Jamie Blades took fourth from Rusty Cooper leaving Rusty with fifth spot. Mark Hardwick and Randy Brownell took the heat wins.
Gregg Hollingsworth and Ron Grandel shared the UMP heats. Hollingsworth brought the field off four for the start and took the lead on the start and held it till the checkers. Billy Collette ran second early on. Bobby Helmer moved into third then took second from Collett. Helmer pushed the petal through the carburetor trying to pass Hollingsworth, but all he could do was get a nose under him. When they came across the line Helmer was half beside Hollingsworth and blue up in a cloud of blue. Helmer being a UPS driver should have raced his big brown truck!
Hollingsworth scored the win Helmer second and Brant Tirello took third. Billy Collett fourth and Jason Taylor fifth.
On the start of the novice Troy Dean got turned around and brought out the yellow and a complete restart. Tim Moran worked his way up through the field and took over the lead. Bill Bounds from dead last worked his way to second. At tech the first two cars were Dqed. So that moved third place Claude Thigpen to the win followed by Stephen Polk and Robert Petit. Darrell Guy and 24 took the heat wins.
Super Stock heat wins went to Robert Morel and Billy Gordon. On the start of the feature it was Gordon with the lead followed by Morel and Bryan Moran. Bryan Anthony moved into third. Gordon and Morel swapped positions several times till finally Gordon hung on to the lead to take the win. Morel finished second, Bryan Anthony third, Donald Collins fourth and Joey Humphreys fifth.
The Simeon brothers Mark and Matthew shared the street stock heat wins and sat on the front row for the feature. Matthew jumped into the lead on the start followed by Mark. With two laps remaining Matthew pulled in the pits and Mark took over as leader. Mark had his hands full with Jamie McClendon, but he held him off and scored his first feature win. McClendon took second. Tommy Cannon took third, Randy Jamison fourth, and Tyrone Taylor fifth .
Sam Patrick, David Ashley and Troy Johnson took the late model heat wins. Sam Patrick brought the 19 car field of late models off four for the start of the feature. Lap after lap Patrick and Ashley ran wheel to wheel. One would get alittle ahead in the turn then on the straightaway the other would pull ahead a little. Finally David Ashley got the lead in the final lap and took the win followed by Sam Patrick, Marlon Wild battled side by side with Curt Lipsey and finally got third. Lipsey finished fourth and Donald Watson fifth.
Pure stock mechanic race was won by Brownell. UMP Mechanic race was Derrick Findly coming off four on the final lap. Street Stock Mechanic was Jerry McKey, Super Stock mechanic was Michael Cater. Late model mechanic was Doug Martin.
