Prior to racing action last Friday night at North Central Arkansas Speedway, fans held a candle lightening ceremony in memory of those who lost their lives in the tragic events that occurred Tuesday across America and special guests, Tosha Boppler and Carnes McCormack, entertained the crowd with a medley of patriotic songs. Racing helmets were passed through the stands and fans, drivers, and NCAS support staff donated over $1,000 for the Uniformed Firefighter’s Association Widow’s and Children’s Fund. Many of the drivers showed their support for America by proudly displaying the American Flag on their cars during Friday night’s racing action.

Racing action began when 18 Hobby cars filled the track for their feature race with Robert Dale Gregory on the pole and Jayson Fisk on the outside. Row two stabled Mike Mayfield and Steve Heenan. Row three housed Ken Williams and Ray Haney. Current points leader Chris Davidson started in 18th.

When the green flag dropped, Heenan charged to the front of the pack followed by Fisk, Gregory, Williams, Mayfield and Richard Reinmuth, #67. On lap 2, Gregory moved into second and Mayfield moved into third. On lap 5, Heenan was still in command of the field when Bill Hickerson looped his car in turn 4 bringing out the first caution of the race. On the restart, Heenan continued his lead followed by Mayfield, Williams, Gregory, Reinmuth and Haney.

On lap 7, Mayfield passed Heenan for the lead, Williams was in third followed by Reinmuth and Haney. On lap 8, another caution was thrown when Gregory looped his car in turn 4. On the restart, Mayfield was out front followed by Williams, Heenan and Dennis Fisk. At the halfway point in the race another caution was thrown when Haney slipped in turn 4 and ended up in the infield. On the restart, Mayfield continued his lead followed by Williams, Reinmuth, Heenan and Davidson, who had worked his way from the back of the pack. On lap 14, Reinmuth left the track with mechanical problems. On lap 18, Williams passed Mayfield on the front stretch for the lead and on lap 19, Hickerson and Davidson got together. When the checkered flag fell, Williams was there for his first win of the season at NCAS followed by Mayfield and Dennis Fisk. Finishing out the top five were Heenan and Stuart Malone.

Eight Super Stocks charged onto the field for their feature race with Jesse Brotherton on the pole and John Mostrom on the outside. Row two housed JW Trammell and Curt Cotter. Row three stabled Joe Davenport and Dr. Roger Simons in his first race of the 2001 season at NCAS. Row four held Josh Farris and Dave Wallace. Lap 1 found Brotherton in control of the field followed by Mostrom, Trammell, Cotter and Davenport. On lap 8, the track was red flagged when Trammell and Davenport got together in turn 4. Both cars experienced extensive damage and were finished for the evening. On the restart, Brotherton continued his lead and Cotter moved into second when Mostrom got high coming out of turn 4. On the next lap, Cotter took the lead from Brotherton in turn 4 followed by Mostrom, Wallace, Dr. Simon and Farris. On lap 15, Farris passed Simon and took over fourth spot. Cotter crossed the finish line first for his eleventh win of the season at NCAS followed by Brotherton and Mostrom. Finishing out the top five were Wallace and Farris.

Seven Mini Stock prepared to take the green flag for their feature race with Jack Essary on the pole and Wayne DeGase on the outside. Row two stabled Steve Farris and Benny Arnall. Row three held Larry Andrus and Ike Moore. Finishing out the lineup was Allen "Big Al" Thompson.

Lap 1 found Essary out front followed by DeGase, Farris, Arnall Andrus, Moore, and Thompson. On lap 2, Farris got loose coming out of turn 4 and dropped back to fourth. On lap 4, Essary continued his lead followed by DeGase, Arnall, Farris and Thompson. On lap 8, Andrus left the track with mechanical problems. On lap 14, Arnall challenged DeGase for second as Farris had problems in turn 1 due to a stuck throttle. Essary took his 19th win of the season at NCAS followed by Arnall and DeGase. Finishing out the top five Thompson and Moore.

Eighteen IMCA Modifieds were on hand to do battle in the 20-lap feature race with Lance Stilling on the pole and Wayne Johnston on the outside. Row two stabled Nial Castle and Jason Hughes. In row three was Jerry Croney and DJ Twitty.

When the green flag dropped, Croney, Twitty and Graybeal got together in turn 4 sending Twitty over the top of Graybeal’s car and into the front stretch wall and catch fence. The track was red flagged while officials removed all three cars from the track. On an original restart, Stilling went to the front of the field followed by Johnston, Castle, Rob Muilenburg and Greg Hughes. On lap 3 with Stilling out in front, Muilenburg moved into second followed by Johnston, Castle, Greg Hughes, Rex Sawyer and Jason Hughes. On lap 4, a caution was thrown when Mike Koch looped his car in turn 4. On the restart, Muilenburg took command of the field followed by G. Hughes, Stilling, Johnston and Sawyer. On lap 11, Sawyer looped his car coming out of turn 4 and Linda Alexander also looped her car coming out of turn 4. On lap 17, Muilenburg continued his lead followed by G. Hughes, Sawyer Johnston and Denny Dennison. Muilenburg took the checkered flag for the win followed by Greg Hughes, and Lance Stilling. Finishing out the top five were Johnson and Dennison.

Sixteen Cruisers took to the track for their feature race with Haney/Williams on the pole and Likes/Stone on the outside. Row two housed Perry/Baker and Briggs/Ulferts. In row three was Linck/Evans and Miller/Miller. Racing action found Haney/Williams in the lead followed by Likes/Stone, Miller/Miller, Richardson/VanDuren and Perry/Baker. On Lap 2, Likes/Stone took the lead followed by Haney/Williams, Briggs/Ulferts, Miller/Miller and Richardson/VanDuren. On lap 4, Likes/Stone continued their lead while Miller/Miller moved into second. On lap 6, Briggs/Ulferts challenged Miller/Miller for second and on lap 7 Briggs/Ulferts passed Miller/Miller on the front stretch to take over the position. On lap 9, Likes and Stone continued their lead followed by Briggs/Ulferts and Richardson/VanDuren when Linck/Evans and Haney/Williams got together in turn 4. On the restart, Briggs/Ulferts challenged Likes/Stone for the lead and on lap 11 a caution was thrown when Linck/Evans and Williams and Haney got together sending both cars tailback. When racing action resumed, Likes/Stone continued their lead all the way to the checkered flag followed by Richardson/VanDuren and Briggs/Ulferts. Finishing out the top five were Dennis/Kevin Linck and Bryant/Curtis. Following tech inspection, Likes/Stone were disqualified, so Richardson/VanDuren assumed their spot in Victory Lane.

Racing action continues this Friday night when Hart’s Vinyl Siding and North Central Arkansas Speedway presents a full race program. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. and racing action begins at 8:00 p.m.
