Bob Wearing Jr. wins feature as Dave Norton wins title at Challenger

Indiana, PA (September 15) - The terrible attack on America has affected us all, and we resumed with our lives as racing went on at the Challenger Raceway on Saturday night. It was Stewart Bus Line Night, as the last night for points found track champions crowned in all four divisions. Dave Norton from Shinglehouse, PA earned the track championship in the Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Models. In the Townsend Gas & Oil Modifieds, the track title will go to Chuck Kennedy from Mars, PA. Jeff Walters from Evans City, PA earned championship honors in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock division. After a very close battle in the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks, rookie driver Mark Marian from Smock, PA emerged with the championship.

Feature winners on the final night of weekly racing sponsored by Stewart Bus Line included Bob Wearing, Jr. The Renfrew, PA driver made a late move to win the Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature, becoming the thirteenth different winner in 2001. Chuck Kennedy backed his point championship with the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature win, his fifth of the season. The Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature win went to Chris Schneider from Tarentum, PA, winning for the second straight week, giving him five wins on the season. Mark Marian clinched the championship with his fifth win in the North East Locators Strictly Stock feature.

The exciting 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature started with Bob Wearing, Jr. and Dave Satterlee on the top of the starting grid. Satterlee led the first two rounds, as Wearing nosed ahead after a restart to lead lap 3. Dave Norton moved to second after a restart on that lap, and made a brief challenge to Wearing. Satterlee regained second, as a yellow flag on lap 7 would set up an extended period of green racing and a superb battle for the lead. Wearing continued to lead, as Satterlee and Norton made repeated challenges. Ron Davies also joined the battle, after starting in 12th position. Davies moved to second on lap 18, with the leaders fighting race traffic. Norton cleared traffic on the inside, and he would nose ahead of Wearing for the lead as lap 21 was scored. When the yellow waved, Norton would lead the way on the restart. Wearing and Norton went side-by-side on the restart, as Norton led by inches when a lap 23 yellow set a two-lap dash to the finish. With another side-by-side battle starting, Wearing made the pass on the outside and would become the 13th different winner this season. Davies made a late charge to nose Norton for second at the checkered flag. Wally Fox was fourth, as David Scott advanced from starting position 15 to finish fifth. Filling the top ten were Tony Raneri, Matt Lux, Gary Lyle, Brad Fiesler, and Doug Eck. Heat race winners were Mel Minnick, Wearing, and Satterlee, and the Last Chance Race went to Scott Brady.

Winning the championship and the 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature was Chuck Kennedy. Carl McKinney took the lead as the race started, as a yellow flag waved on lap 1. Sixth starting Kennedy moved to second before the next yellow on lap 4, which was the final one of the event. Kennedy nosed ahead of McKinney on the restart, as he would take the lead for good. With the laps clicking by, Kennedy pulled away as Rick Robinson moved to second. With no problems over the closing laps, Kennedy would go on to his fifth victory of the season. Robinson turned in a good run for second. Third would be contested through the late stages of the race, as Jeff Taylor took the spot ahead of McKinney and Jim Baker. Taylor and Kennedy were the heat winners.

Chris Schneider became the first driver to win consecutive features in the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature. With defending winners starting in 12th position, that was no deterrent for Schneider as he quickly marched his way forward. Rob Shook led early, before Joe Kelley slipped by just before a yellow flag period on lap 5. Butch Lambert posed a challenge to Kelley, but that ended with Lambert losing power on lap 8. Schneider moved to second at this point, as grabbed the lead as Kelley bobbled on lap 10. Kelley made a late charge to regain the lead, but Schneider would go on to take his fifth win of the season. Kelley was second as Shook recorded his best finish of the season in third. First-time visitors Jim Byers and Darrell Bossard were fourth and fifth. Point champion Jeff Walters, Bossard, and Schneider were the heat winners, as Herm Bertolini took the Last Chance Race.

Mark Marian collected the track championship and the feature win in the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks. Starting third, Marian moved to the lead on lap 1, having just a one-point advantage entering this race. Heat winner Bill Hebenthal moved to second, but lost the spot to Tom Taylor just before a lap 8 yellow. On a later yellow on lap 12, John Mazey saw his championship hopes go up in smoke as his engine expired. Marian held off a late bid from Taylor to score his fifth victory of the season. Hebenthal was third, ahead of Bill Sigafoes and Joe Starcher.

Though the regular season is completed, there is still a lot of racing action remaining at the Challenger Raceway. On the coming Saturday, September 22, the Pure Stock division will take center stage with the running of the Pure Stock "Super Challenge." The Strictly Stock division will also be on the card, as will bike races for the kids, and bus races. The gates will open at 5:00, with racing starting at 7:30.

Rounding out the 2001 racing season will be Fall Fest VII. Challenger's annual Fall Fest includes three days of racing. On Friday night, October 12, the Fall Fest kickoff will see the Mid-Atlantic Championship Series Late Models visiting for the running of the "Challenge of the Champions Classic." The 35-lap main event will pay $4,000 to the winner. The gates will open at 5:00, with racing starting at 7:30.
