Racing action heats up as season dwindles down

By Jane H. Estes

North Central Arkansas Speedway (NCAS) saw another night of hard, fast-paced driving last Friday night when NCAS and Bank of the Ozarks presented a full race program and go-karts.

Racing action started when 16 Hobby cars filled the track for their feature race with Mike Mayfield on the pole and Ken Schaufler on the outside. In row two was James Mayfield and Ken Williams. Row three stabled Heath Davenport and Richard Reinmuth. Current points leader Chris Davidson started back in the field in fourteenth position.

Lap 1 found Mike Mayfield out front followed by Schaufler, Davenport, James Mayfield, Williams, Jayson Fisk and Ray Haney. A caution was thrown on lap 2 when the #21 of Carry Smith stalled on the track. On the restart, Mayfield continued his lead followed by Davenport, Williams, Schaufler, James Mayfield and Fisk. On lap 4, coming out of turn 4 Davenport took command of the field and Davidson was working his way to the front. On lap 6, a caution was thrown when Dwayne Due and Allen McChesney got together in turn 4. On the restart, Davenport maintained the lead followed by Mayfield, William, Schaufler, Mayfield, and Davidson.

At the halfway point in the race, Davenport was still out front with Davidson in second followed by Mayfield, Williams and Schaufler. On lap 11, Schaufler fell off the pace and Fisk moved into fifth. On lap 17, the track was red flagged when a barricade tire got clipped and landed in the middle of the track in turn 4. On the restart as Davenport charged to the front followed closely by Davidson, the track saw another red flag when Haney and Mayfield got together in turn 2. On the restart, Davenport led the way to the checkered flag followed by Davidson and Williams. Finishing out the top five were Fisk and James Mayfield.

Eight Super Stocks charged onto the track for their feature race with Dave Wallace on the pole and Joe Davenport on the outside. In row two was Greg Ott and John Mostrom. Row three housed Jessie Brotherton and Curt Cotter. In row four sat Josh Farris and Lawson Curtis.

When the green flag dropped, Ott charged to the front of the pack followed by Davenport, Mostrom, Brotherton and Cotter. On lap two, the track was red flagged after Brotherton, Mostrom and Cotter raced three wide out of turn 4, sandwiching Mostrom in the middle. Mostrom’s axle snapped in turn two from the fray sending Mostrom’s left rear tire towards Crooked Creek and he and Cotter into the backstretch wall. Mostrom left the track on the hook and Cotter went to the tailback position. On the restart, a caution was thrown when Lawson’s car slowed on the track. On the restart, Ott resumed his lead followed by Wallace, Davenport, Brotherton, Cotter and Farris. On lap 12, another caution was thrown when Brotherton looped his car in turn 4. On the restart, Ott was still in command of the field followed by Wallace, Davenport and Cotter. On lap 16, Ott led the way as Davenport and Cotter raced side by side for second and Wallace and Brotherton raced side by side for fourth. Leading from flag-to-flag, Ott took the checkered flag for the win followed by Davenport and Cotter. Finishing out the to five were Brotherton and Wallace.

Six Mini Stock were on hand to compete in their feature race of the evening with Wayne DeGase on the pole and Jack Essary on the outside. Row two held Benny Arnall and Allen Thompson. In row three was Scott Manley and Flippin’s own Steve Farris making his Mini Stock racing debut in the 90S.

When racing action began Essary found his way to the front of the field followed by DeGase, Thompson, Arnall, Manley, and Farris. On lap 4, Arnall took third spot from Thompson. On lap 13, Arnall took over second from DeGase. Essary led the way to the checkered flag followed by Arnall and DeGase. Finishing out the field was Thompson, Manley and Farris.

Eleven IMCA Modifieds took to the track for their 20-lap feature race with Nial Castle on the pole and current point’s leader Rob Muilenburg on the outside. Row two housed Jerry Croney and Earl Muilenburg. In row three sat Mike Koch and DJ Twitty. Making his Modified-racing debut was the JM28 of John Mostrom starting in eleventh position.

When the green flag flew, Rob Muilenburg charged to the front of the field followed by Earl Muilenburg, Castle, Croney and Twitty. On lap 5, Twitty passed Castle to take over third spot. At the halfway point in the race, Rob Muilenburg was still in command of the race followed by Earl Muilenburg, Twitty, Castle and Croney. On the white flag lap, no caution was thrown when Croney looped his car in turn 2. Rob Muilenburg passed under the checkered flag first for the win followed by Earl Muilenburg, and Twitty. Finishing out the top five were Castle and Wayne Johnston.

Thirteen Cruisers lined up side-by-side to take the green flag in their feature race with Richardson/James on the pole and Linck/Evans on the outside. Row two held Haney/Williams and Likes/Stone. Row three house Bryant/Curtis and Perry/Baker.

Lap 1 found Richardson/James in the lead followed by Haney/Williams, Dennis and Kevin Linck, Bryant/Curtis, Likes/Stone and Perry/Baker.
