Ron Davies wins at Challenger

Indiana, PA (September 1) - Ron Davies from Warren, PA raced to the victory in the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on Saturday night at Challenger Raceway. It was his second victory of the season, in as many different cars. Other winners on the night of racing sponsored by North East Locators Auto Sales included Mike Hess from Waterford, PA in the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature. His first victory of the season made him the 12th different winner in the division in 2001. Notching his fourth feature win of the season was Jeff Walters from Evans City, PA in the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature. Mark Marian from Smock, PA picked up his fourth feature win of the season in the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stock feature, and also advanced to the division point lead.

The 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature had Gary Lyle and Rob King on top of the starting grid. Lyle took command at the drop of the green flag, as Dave Norton moved up to challenge. On a lap 4 restart, Norton made the charge to take over the lead. A later restart on lap 6 saw Lyle grab the lead back, but the move was nullified by a six-car tangle in turn one. Norton continued to show the way as the race resumed, as eleventh starting Ron Davies took over second right before a lap 10 restart. Back to green, the race for the lead would be on. Davies used the outside to take command of the event on lap 15. But Norton did not give up, and when Davies bobbled off of turn four, Norton took the lead back on lap 19. A final yellow flag on lap 21 set up a four lap run to the finish, as the race for the lead continued. Norton led lap 22, as Davies used the outside to lead lap 23. Pulling ahead, Davies went on to score the victory. Norton settled for a close second, and remains as the division point leader. Lyle was third, as **** Barton advanced from starting position 13 to finish fourth. King was fifth, as Jim Dandy, Jr., Tony Raneri, Jason Carnahan, Brad Fiesler, and Steve Everhart rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Lyle, Tony Burke, and Barton.

The 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature had Jim Baker and Shawn Domhoff leading the field at the start. Domhoff grabbed the lead at the start, as third starting Mike Hess challenged on a lap 1 restart. Hess would take the lead at lap 2, using the extreme inside groove of the speedway. Hess held off all challenges until the final restart came on lap 13. Rick Meglaye held second, before outside running Chuck Kennedy passed on lap 16. Kennedy quickly moved up to challenge Hess, and would be ahead at the line on lap 17. Hess came back to lead lap 18, and he would hold it to the finish in scoring his first win in just his second visit this season. Point leader Kennedy was second, with Meglaye third. Jeff Taylor was fourth, with Bob Rougeaux fifth. Heat winners were Rougeaux, Taylor, and Kennedy, and the Last Chance Race winner was Rob Kosecki.

Nick Reges and Chuck Cook led the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature to the green flag. Reges took command from the start, and Cook would retire from the event during a lap 3 caution period. Joining the lead battle were Rob Kosecki and eighth starting Jeff Walters. On a lap 5 restart, Walters advanced from second to take over the race lead. The battle was for second in the closing laps, as point leader Walters would race home as the winner. Kosecki took the runner-up position, ahead of 12th starting Butch Lambert. Many would pass a lot of cars, as fourth went to 21st starting Joe Kelley, and 15th starting Craig Lobb took fifth. Walters and Kosecki were the heat winners.

Mark Marian hit the trifecta in the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks, by winning the heat race, the 15 lap feature, and also taking over the division point lead. Bill Sigafoes led from the start, before Don Rodgers challenged. They ran lap 3 side-by-side, with Rodgers taking over on lap 4. Third starting Marian pulled up to challenge, and took command on lap 8. Once in front, the battle would be for second as Marian outdistanced the field to score the win. Tom Taylor took second spot with a last lap pass of Sigafoes. Joe Rubcic was fourth, with Bill Hebenthal fifth.
