STOKES AND HUDSON TAKE FIRST WINS OF '01 AT HVS
For immediate release September 1, 2001
CLEARFIELD, PA - Bobby Stokes of Milton and Lester Hudson Jr. of Clearfield
won their first feature events of the season Saturday night at Hidden Valley
Speedway. Stokes topped the Sids Subs Late Models and Hudson held on to take
the Northwest Bae Kennel Pure Stock Special.
Repeat winners include: Spencer Husted of West Decatur in the Kneppy's
Fireworks Small Block Modifieds, Doug Tibbens of Curwensville in the 84
Lumber Street Stocks and Joe Leigey of Mt. Zion in the four cylinders.
Bobby Stokes and Eric Moore led the late models to the start, with Stokes
taking the lead. As Stokes was opening up his lead, the caution fell three
times tightening the field. This put George Fultz on Stokes bumper, who then
pursued the #27 the rest of the way, trying the inside and the outside, but
not finding the power to muscle into the lead. When the race finished, it
was Stokes by a car length over Fultz with Jake Shady, Luke Hoffner and
Duane Stiner completing the top five. Heat winners were Bobby Stokes and
Spencer Husted and Faye Lumadue led the field of 24 small block modifieds
to the start with Husted taking the lead. As Husted was setting the pace the
field was going three wide jockeying for position. As Husted moved into
lapped traffic, Red Fordyce was closing in but Husted was determined to pad
his point lead, as he took his 4th win of the season. Fordyce was second,
with Bob Garvey, Lumadue and Mike Stine completing the top five. Chetter
Johnson, Scott Smith and Fordyce won the preliminaries.
Kip Charles beat Rich Howell into the first turn at the start of the street
stock feature. As the field ran nose-to-tail and door-to-door the action
heated up with the top five going three wide for the lead numerous times, as
Charles continued to lead, but working lap 13 Tibbens dove under Charles
coming off turn two and stayed to the inside through turns three and four,
with Tibbens coming out on top to lead lap 13. Charles nearly spun a lap
later, losing three spots, as Tibbens had to hold off Dan Smeal to get his
third win of the season. Smeal, Todd Mathews, Charles and Ray Billotte
completed the top five. Charles and Howell won the heats.
Dave Farrell and Joe Leigey led the four cylinders to the start, with lady
racer Cecilia Olson coming from third to lead the first lap. She was setting
a torrid pace, and was holding off Dave Farrell and the rest of the field,
but working lap thirteen Leigey had worked his way to second and then the
lead and went on to claim his fifth win of the season. Olson, Derek Rodkey,
Chris Farrell and Dave Farrell completed the top five. Dave Farrell and
Leigey won the heats.
Gary Little led the opening to laps of the pure stock special by beating
Harvey Wallbanger into the first turn. Lester Hudson Jr. came from fourth to
use an inside move to gain the lead from Little exiting turn two and heading
down the backstretch. Bernie Whetstone soon moved by Little and set his
sights on Hudson, trying high and low, Whetstone could not get by Hudson who
went to victory lane for the first time in a regular feature. Whetstone was
second, ahead of Wallbanger, Frank Little and Gary Little. Prelims were on
by Wallbanger and Gary Little.
