Race Winners Saturday at WPMS

As the 2001 race season winds down, lots of fans were on hand and a large number of racers converged at West Plains Motor Speedway, where KKDY, Budweiser, and Great Rivers Distributing were honored with an Appreciation Night program Saturday night.
When the evenings event kicked off the KKDY van along with a Great Rivers Distributing vehicle lead the past race winners onto the track for the parade lap during the National Anthem. KKDY and Great Rivers have both made special efforts to promote the race season and the special events this season.
In the IMCA Modified feature event fans saw the lead change 11 times during the 20 lap event. Kevin Salter of Batesville, AR, found his way to Victory Lane after starting in the sixth starting spot and taking the lead on lap 19 for the win. Rounding out the top five were Bill Gillian of Steelville, MO, Greg Hughes of West Plains, MO, Shawn Walsh of Ash Flat, AR and Jason Meadors of Fordland, MO. Each of those drivers lead at one time or the other during the main event.
In contrast the Super Stock feature event saw Steve Sanders of Mtn. Grove, MO, took the lead at the drop of the green and went flag to flag as the leader. While volleying for the second spot, eight drivers swapped positions for the second spot during the 20-lap feature. At the drop of the checkered flag Cody Kelly of Birch Tree, MO, was in second followed by Jesse Brotherton of Pomona, MO, Stan Ellison of West Plains, MO and Derald Kelly of Birch Tree, MO.
The Hobby Stock feature contest saw Mike Mayfield of West Plains, MO, take the lead and really show his strength as he pulled onto Victory Lane after 20 laps. Rounding out the top five were Pete Harris of Pottersville, MO, Dexter Frost of Birch Tree, MO, Donnie Miller of Branson, MO and Richard Reinmuth of Koshkonong, MO.
Shannon Clinton of Willow Springs, MO, won the Cruiser main event as he lead 22 Cruisers around the 3/8 mile clay oval. He was followed across the finish by Billy Johns of Hardy, AR, Andrew Harden of West Plains, MO, points leader Paula Ross of Flippin, AR and David Collins of West Plains, MO.
Two young race fans won bicycles this week. Eleven year old, Adam Baldridge of Hardy, AR and six year old Daniel French of Mtn. View, MO, proudly took home new bikes.
Nearly 100 bicycles and scooters have been awarded to young race fans this season through the courtesy of West Plains Motor Speedway and event sponsors.
With the last points race of the season set for next weekend it's sure to be another exciting night of close, competitive and thrill packed racing at West Plains Motor Speedway. The MARS Super Late Models will be making their final appearance of the 2001 season with the 12th annual MARS Fall Nationals, sponsored by Wal-Mart SuperCenter of West Plains. All classes will be racing.
