Lux wins his Late Model first at Challenger

Indiana, PA (August 25) - Matt Lux from Franklin, PA raced to victory in the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on Saturday night at Challenger Raceway. Lux made the big jump from the Pure Stock division, and highlighted his first season in the Late Models by taking his first win on this night.

It was Double Point Night, sponsored by North East Locators Auto Sales. Including Lux, three of the night's four winners collected their first victories of the season. Bob Rougeaux from Rochester Mills, PA became the 11th different winner this season in the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature event. Butch Lambert from Mars, PA leads the Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock division in feature wins, after racing to his fifth of the season. Also scoring his first win was Bill Hebenthal from Blairsville, PA in the North East Locators Strictly Stock feature.

Matt Lux and Wally Fox led the 25-lap Pittsburgh Crankshaft Late Model feature on the starting grid. Lux moved to the lead at the start, as third starting Gary Lyle quickly moved up to challenge. Lyle pulled alongside on several occasions, but Lux continued to lead before the first of two cautions in the event showed on lap 7. When the green appeared for the final time on lap 10, Lux was now able to move away from the field. Lyle was now losing ground in second, as the battle would be for third as the race progressed. Lux went on to score his first win in his rookie season in the division, with a flawless drive. Lyle matched his season best finish in second. Making the charge from 13th starting position, Ron Davies was closing on the leaders at the end but settled for third. Point leader Dave Norton was fourth, with Rodney Phillips fifth. Nick Jones, Chuck Kennedy, Fox, Jason Carnahan, and Jack Thornton rounded out the top ten. Heat race winners were Carnahan and Davies.

The 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature started with Bobby Watt and Jim Baker on the front row. Watt would lead from the start, as fifth starting Bob Rougeaux moved up to challenge Baker for second. Disaster struck on lap 7 as Watt spun, collecting Baker and five other drivers. Rougeaux inherited the lead, and he quickly felt pressure from Jeff Taylor. Chuck Kennedy is in a tight point race with Taylor, and he was forced to pit on lap 10 with problems. When Kennedy returned to ride it out to the finish, he seemed destined to lose a lot of ground in the standings. Rougeaux and Taylor continued to battle for the lead, as Taylor would finally pass on lap 13. But problems would immediately strike Taylor, as a broken driveshaft would end his race. Russ Dunn would challenge Rougeaux throughout the remaining distance, but Rougeaux would hold on to post the win in the Tim Spack owned machine. Dunn settled for a close second, with Jim Bertges taking third. Rick Meglaye turned in a strong run to finish fourth, as Gerry Schimp advanced from starting position 21 to finish fifth. Despite limping home in 14th, Kennedy will take the point lead. Kennedy, Dunn, and Rougeaux were the heat winners.

Getting an A for effort in the 15-lap Stewart Bus Line Pure Stock feature was Butch Lambert. Mike Hilla, Jr. and John Hartman had led the field to green, with Hilla leading early. Fifth starting Lambert moved up to challenge and passed Hilla during lap 5, but a yellow flag would wipe the move out. Again on lap 7, Lambert passed and a yellow would nullify the pass. Finally on lap 10, Hilla bobbled in turn four and Lambert flashed by to finally take the lead officially. Rob Kosecki then moved up to challenge, as they would run a few laps side-by-side. Lambert held on to score his fifth victory of the season over Kosecki, as the yellow flag waved eight times in the event. Chuck Cook turned in a strong run to finish third. Jeff Walters defended his point lead by finishing fourth, with first-time visitor Dwight Boice taking fifth. Heat winners were Lambert and Harold Reges.

Making the most of Double Point Night was Bill Hebenthal, who raced to victory in the 15-lap feature for the North East Locators Auto Sales Strictly Stocks. Though Hebenthal had led from the start, heat winner Mark Marian passed him for the lead on lap 4. Marian and John Mazey are in a tight race for the point lead, and Marian seemingly had the upper hand to move ahead in the point race. That all changed on lap 8, when Marian slowed with steering problems on his car. Then it seemed that Mazey had the break in the points, as he assumed command when the race resumed. But when he slowed with problems, Hebenthal would take the lead back and hold it to the finish, gaining a lot of ground in the point race. Bill Sigafoes made a late challenge, but settled for second. Tom Taylor was third, ahead of Cliff Abbott and Joe Rubcic. Mazey finished sixth and holds a just a three point lead over Marian and Hebenthal.
