Shaver tops STARS at Challenger
Indiana, PA (August 19) - Steve Shaver from Parkersburg, WV was the winner of the 50-lap Renegade STARS Racing Series Late Model feature on Sunday night at the Challenger Raceway. Sharing the card was the Townsend Gas & Oil Modified division, as Randy Hall from Olean, NY was the winner, and Jeff Jones was big winner. Hall joined Shaver in picking up their first-ever victories at the Challenger Raceway, as Jones made out thanks to the luck of the draw as it yielded him the $1000 BONUS BUCKS from North East Locators Auto Sales.
The 50-lap Renegade STARS Late Model main event started with Steve Shaver and Chub Frank on the front row of the starting grid. Racing side-by-side from the drop of the green, Frank led the first lap with Shaver nosing ahead on lap 2. Their battle at the point would continue until the first yellow flag of the event would appear on lap 12. Shaver was able to get away on this restart, as the next yellow would appear on lap 18. Another period of green flag racing would see sixth starting Billy Drake up to challenge, as he took second from Frank on lap 26. Drake closed in quickly on leader Shaver, and was making a strong bid to pass as the yellow waved again on lap 32. Through several late restarts, Shaver was able to hold off all challenges to race home with his first Challenger victory. Drake had won the earlier STARS event this season at Challenger, but the Illinois driver would settle for second. Third place was hotly contested in the closing laps, and it would go to Sammy Stile. Stile turned in an impressive drive after starting the event in 18th starting position. Mike Balzano would finish fourth, with Frank continuing as the STARS point leader with his finish in fifth. Todd Andrews, Nick Jones, Dave Norton, Bob Wearing, Jr., and David Scott completed the top ten. In earlier time trials, the fastest qualifier was Chub Frank as his lap of 15.631 established a new track record. Qualifying heat race winners were Wearing, Shaver, and Balzano, as Shaver was the dash winner. The B-Main winner was Norton.
The 20-lap Townsend Gas & Oil Modified feature was won by the man who came the farthest to race, as New York's Randy Hall made his visit pay off. Hall grabbed the lead from Bruce Dreistadt at the drop of the green from the outside pole position and quickly started to pull away from the field. The division's top two point cars, Jeff Taylor and Chuck Kennedy, quickly moved to second at third after starting in the second row. But the two four-time winners this season were battling among themselves, as Hall pulled away with green flags laps clicking away. The first yellow flag of the event on lap 12 erased a full straight lead built up by Hall, but back to green it was still Taylor and Kennedy continuing their battle for second. After a late yellow on lap 17, Kennedy grabbed second and posed a brief challenge to Hall, before a costly slip would hurt him. Hall would take the victory over Taylor, Carl McKinney, Kennedy, and Jim Bertges. Taylor holds the division point lead by just two points. Heat race winners were Hall and Kennedy. The top ten finishers were stopped on the track, and a random number was picked between one and ten to decide who would receive the North East Locators Auto Sales BONUS BUCKS. When the number ten was selected, tenth place finisher Jeff Jones collected the $1000 bonus.
