After a brief rain delay Saturday night, racing action at Friendship Speedway in Elkin, NC lived up to fans expectations and those who came looking for action Dirt Track Style, didnít leave disappointed. Even the younger generation got into the program as the kids competed in bicycle and power wheel races with trophies, gift certificates and cash prizes going to the winners.
With multiple lead changes, side by side action and numerous passes for positions, the Semi-Modified 4 feature was up for grabs throughout the race. When all was said and done Eddie Blackburn of Elkin, NC in his Choice Center Homes; Manís Best Friend Mustang had fought his way back to Victory Lane with Steve Faw persevering to claim second. Derrick Mathis skillfully worked his way through the field to take the third place honors. Mathis had been negated to the rear after an earlier incident with a lap car. Junior Welborn held on to finish fourth with Sandy Martin claiming the fifth position.
In Pure Stock action Marty Billings of Traphill, NC, in his Dannyís Automotive, Cornerstone Exteriors Chevrolet, exhibited horsepower and handling in taking the checkers. Paul West still in his rookie season challenged Billings throughout the race to finish second. Aaron Hill and Jimmy Grimes traded positions several times with Hill finishing third and Grimes fourth. Jerry Bray rounded out the top five.
Late Model action kept fans on their feet as Clint Elkins of Lincolnton, NC in his Duncan Logging and Chipping Monte Carlo out paced the field and brought the D & D Race Team a big win. Terry Cardwell, Elkinsí strongest challenger, finished in the second slot followed by Ronald Blankenship in third with his strongest run of the season. Keith Holder, after having problems in the heat race, came from the rear of the field to finish fourth. Noel Tucker, a strong contender in the Late Model division points battle, was fifth.
Terry Zachary gave current points leader Joel Bray all he wanted for most of the Sportsman Feature, only to swing wide coming out of turn four, allowing Bray to take the lead. Bray of Hamptonville, NC, in his Fat Catís Auction; Fleetwood Homes Chevrolet, held Zachary off to take the win with Zachary finishing second. Daniel Moss, Greg Brown and Grayland Wagoner completed the top five.
The no cautions Mudslinger Feature had Mickey Anderson of Statesville, NC taking down the win. Jody Trivette in his first appearance in this division ran a strong second with Steven Anderson, Carl Ploof and Rodney Hazelwood finishing third, fourth and fifth respectively.
The Powder Puff Race, a special race for the ladies, had Sherry Bray of Hamptonville, NC in the Stratford Hearing Aid Center; Shumate Seamless Guttering Monte Carlo, taking the win. Her no holds barred driving style made her the second Bray of the evening to visit Victory Lane. Kim Baity and Miranda Trivette battled for position finishing second and third. Michelle Myers took down fourth place with Shirley Vance finishing fifth.
Up coming events at Friendship include special Labor Day weekend programs including the Carolina Clash Super Late Model Series on September 1 with a special $2000.00 to win Late Model race on Labor Day, September 3. Gates will open at 4:00 PM this Saturday with racing at 6:00 PM.
