Patience pays off for Norris in pursuit of Show-Me championship
WEST PLAINS, Mo. (Aug. 4) - Mark Norris was in the right place at the right time to win the ninth annual Show-Me Championship at West Plains Motor Speedway.
The Clinton, Ark., pilot came started on the outside of row two and was quickly running second in the National Modi-fied Series event. Patiently, he held the support spot behind Kevin Salter of Batesville, Ark., the polesitter and dominat-ing contender.
Salter bolted ahead and led the first 37 circuits, but slowed and pulled to the top of the track with a flat tire and just three laps remaining.
Norris took charge from that point, taking the top check of $4,500 ahead of Brad Buck, Rex Merritt and Eric Turner.
Series points leader Brian Foote ran 20th.
The feature was characterized by side-by-side duels for position and 23 of the I.M.C.A. Sunoco Modifieds that took the initial green flag were still on the track when the checkered came out.
Only three cautions came out over the course of the feature, the first on lap six when Chris Moore spun.
A second caution came out on lap 12 as officials observed a fluid on the track. Greg Hughes had dropped his power-steering fluid, but it evaporated without a drying aid and the race resumed with Hughes opting to drive without his power-steering.
The final caution came on lap 22 as Johnny Bone, Jr. spun between turns three and four after contact was made by Marlin Shehorn. Both cars went to the back.
Salter earned the pole start by winning Thursday night's qualifying feature. Norris finished second in that race, rating the outside second row start.
Fourteen dates remain on the National Modified Series slate, with the next race Thursday night, Aug. 9 at Hancock County Speedway in Britt, Iowa.
